I need help getting started!! (and php)

Firstly.. this is all very confusing to me.. can someone explain breifly why I have to ftp through powweb and not directly to my site? Its really annoying.

I heard about the cname thing but I don't understand..

What I'm trying to do now, is install a phpBB.. but when I go to www.mydomain.com/install/install.php it can't be found.

In fact I can't seem to access anything through the borwser except documents in htdocs.. no folder though...

It can't be this rediculous... there must be an easier way.. to work without the tight grip of powweb on your website...

You are FTPing to your site. Your FTP server is ftpxx.powweb.com - if you want to use ftp.yourdomain.com, simply create a CNAME in OPS that points to your ftpxx.powweb.com FTP server. If you do this, don't forget the trailing period after ftpxx.powweb.com.

More than likely your domain hasn't finished propagating, so that's why your install file cannot be found. What is your domain?

Correct - anything you want visible to the web has to be within htdocs. This is common to almost all hosting companies, whether you see the folder is different from host to host.

if you could tell me exactly what i need to do for the cname, and then what i change in FTP explorer to use it... i would greatly appreciate it..

my domain is www.kaeoflux.com

im trying to access www.kaeoflux.com/install/install.php

ive tries www.kaeoflux.com/phpBB2/install/install.php

and

www.kaeoflux.com/htdocs/phpBB2/install/install.php

If you'll log into OPS, click on the package. Then go to the FTP tab to verify which FTP server you're on. Then go to the DNS tab and click on 'Add CNAME'. For the alias, type 'ftp' and for the hostname type the FTP server you found on the FTP tab such as 'ftp03.powweb.com. - you must include the trailing period after com in the hostname. Click save and give it 10-15 minutes for your DNS zone to update.

Then in your FTP program, for your hostname you'll be able to use ftp.kaeoflux.com


Now as for the phpbb2 install, going to this URI: http://www.kaeoflux.com/phpBB2/install/install.php I get the install page.

dorry this is very different from my other cobalt server

install requires:

Database Server Hostname / DSN

Your Database Name

Database Username

Database Password

Prefix for tables in database

Yes, you need to create your database first. This isn't done by default since not every user requires one. Log into OPS, click on your pacakge, then go to the Billing/Plan tab. Towards the bottom will be where you enable MySQL. After doing that, go to the new MySQL tab to create your database users (max of three).

As for the table prefix, I'd say just use the default prefix for simplicity.
