I was apporached recently by someone wanting to colorize aerial photographs, the techniques they had been using were taking impossibly long lenghts of time. BM did the job in about 2 minutes !!!

Here is the original :

Black and white (http://www.black-and-white-to-color.com/stuff/bmtest2.jpg)

and here is the 2 min job

colored (http://www.black-and-white-to-color.com/stuff/myversion2.jpg)

here is another version

colored2 (http://www.black-and-white-to-color.com/stuff/myversion1.jpg)

The technique is to apply colrs to pixels based on their greyscale and then to do a flood layered color, BM is very good at geting the mixes to blend well, especially for such things as skin tone

Oh dear this all sounds like a plug !!!

the banding was in the original b/w image due to it being made up of several shots but i am sure this could have been removed with some pre or post work

The idea was not to get an accurate depiction of color ( though with time and pateince i could have done this) it was to get a general feel of a color landscpe for a background for the flight sim

I think you will agree that for such a quick turn around this is quite good, the images are only to be used for computer animated landscpes ( flight sims) though with a bit more work they could be made a lot better

yes 2 mins !! and with a bit more effort you could add much more variation

That is what i found amazing about the program when i first encountered it. take a look at this :

Great job Paul :)

I think I prefer the 1st one, it has more contrasting features.
