I've mentioned this before but was out for a little different answer at that time. This time around, is basicly the same but for starters, I have more time to tinker.

I have Adobe Premiere 6.5 but am willing to download any plugin or look into other software if need be.

I'm looking to compress a file small enough to fit on a cd but yet keep the best quality I can. If I could run dvd, I would; but, I only have a cd burner as of now. For that reason, as long as I go with 700 meg cd's, keeping the general 680 meg limit on it, I was wondering if anybody had ideas as to what I could use for codecs and such. Universal playing is somewhat of an issue but I guess not too major. For the most part, the only computer playing the file will me my laptop (output to a tv of course:D).

Stats on the existing file:

Image: 320x240
Audio: Duration - 1:59:10 Bit Rate - 705kbps Sample - 16 bit Format - PCM

Video: Frame Rate - 14fr/sec Data Rate - 7kbps Sample - 12 bit Compression - MS H.263

Current filesize - 12.0 GB (12,939,788,288 bytes) aka 1/3 of my drive
Target size - 680-690 MB aka 1 CD

Ideas?

try divx, it is probably the best for compression and quality

www.divx.com

you can get the codec as well as players from there, some players are free and there are a range of commercial products

once you have the codec then it will be available from other programs, render, compression settings you just choose divx as the codec and configure to your needs

Okay, been to Divx, downloaded a few things from there and other places; but, what codec is actually divx?

Looking at the latest program I've downloaded:

Cinepak Codec by Radius
Intel Indeo Video R3.2
Intel Indeo Video 4.5
Intel IYUV Codec
Microsoft Video 1
Indeo Video 5.1
Intel I.263 Video Driver 2.44.016

If I knew the codec, I could get this file off of here and regain hard drive space. Everything I've found about Premiere claims it can't do divx.

divx should show as well.. divx

it is an mpeg compression ( 4 i think) and renders out as avi files

Thanks...

The ones I listed were all that are shown in ReadmeSoft's Avi to Divx - go figure.

But, I also got a copy of Virtual Dub (opensource) and it includes the Divx 5.11 codec.

As a side note, the Adobe Premiere boards say that Divx doesn't render correctly; but, I was able to get something to come out. Of course I used Virtual Dub to do the big file (woohoo I've got it two ways - 1cd or 2cds just for safe keepings) but I made about a 14minute compilation of clips from the movie and have it down to 50meg. That was through Permiere. Of course that's not the greatest of quality either; but, I was just messing with it to see if it could do it.

Thanks for the Divx idea to begin with - great quality for the size... just as good as the original.

now if I could only go from wmv to divx without problems - but I can't because of MacroHard's copyright. Or at least I can't do it witih V-Dub. Oh well, I'll convert to something else first one of a number of other programs.

another good thing about divx is if you enlarge the film, i.e show as full screen you get very good quality

me and [allt]+[enter] get along great. I can't stand anything less than full screen :D That's what I see that I like about divx... no squares
