View Full Version : Is Callisto Down?

I can't access my web site. http://maddhouz.com/Maddradio/

It's on and off everyday. Sometimes for a few minutes. Is that normal?

Yeah, my Callisto site is down right now, too.

Haven't noticed the daily see-sawing you mention, though.

Does this happen everyday at a certain time? I'm monitoring it now but if you have any other information, that'd be great.

For my callisto site, it has been rock-solid for many months. It is down now, of course. I monitor the site hourly and availability and performance has been excellent for a long time.

maddhouz

Everyday this week my site was down for a few minutes at a time while I was working. This is the first time in months since it's been down for a while.

Apache was running ok, but the server was being dos attacked. We filtered out the right ip's and the sites should be loading fine. We will keep an eye on this for you.

nada.

Still can't connect.

Support tells me callisto should be back within 10 minutes.

maddhouz, I think you have problems other than the server. callisto is one of the most reliable servers PowWeb has, according to my monitoring statistics. Here's what I have for February:

Monthly Server Summary
Monitoring Location: Houston, TX
From: 02/01/2004 To: 02/29/2004

Domain name Domain address Server type Total checks Failures Average Response Time (ms.) Ping results Uptime
Average Loss Minimum (ms.) Average (ms.) Maximum (ms.)
Kitty Angels kittyangels.org HTTP 700 0 331.98 - - - - 100.00%

There were some hiccups in January, now that I look at the data, but they were few and brief.

Yeah, I'm on Callisto, and I can't get to my site either. It was okay a few hours ago. FTP seems to be working okay, though.

callisto is one of the most reliable servers PowWeb has,
It has been pretty stable for the last few months, but it is because of callisto quite a few users were given 6 months credit, when I first started with powweb callisto was one of the most troubled servers. It was so bad they were letting people switch servers if they were willing to deal with those headaches.
And my site which is also on callisto has been down, I can ftp into it but no http.

oldskool
3-6-04, 02:26 PM
I'm still down as well.

I can access it from Home, but I can't get to it at work (where it's needed). I guess my work address was one of the IP's that were blocked...

It's not back, I have no access to my site other than ftp. It would appear that if they blocked a range of IP's mine has been blocked and is unacceptable and needs to be fixed ASAP.

Hey Stevel, it was Callisto because I had just signed up for Powweb and they put me on that server and wouldn't switch me to another one.

I don't know about space, but callisto did have problems. I'm one of the users who got 6 months credit (on 27 Sep 2002). Callisto was down quite a lot back then.

This web hosting company is useless. How am I suppose to be able to run a business with my website down? This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen with any of my past web hosters. Looks like I won't be giving Powweb any of my money to renew. Anyone know a better web host?

stevel
3-7-04, 08:40 AM
"Better"? Please define. I don't know of anything better at PowWeb's price point, and I've looked at a lot.

If you can't stand an hour or two of downtime every six months or so, then sure, go look at hosts with dedicated, redundant servers. It'll cost ya.

My site is down for a 3rd day in the row. Only answer from support is 'we are working on it'. This is already far away from 99.7% and there is no announcement that something is wrong either. It's seems like the time to leave the ship.

I don't know about your site, but my callisto site is fine and was back up after a couple of hours. If you're still having problems, it's something else. But your rohwrestling site loads fine for me.

callisto has not been down today for sure.

-ROH officials have held several meetings regarding Teddy Hart's press release. Hart has stated that he will be at the March 13th event whether he is booked or not. ROH officials fear that he will try to ruin the Scramble Cage II main event and could pose as a major distraction for the rest of the show if he is watching in the crowd. ROH is taking the high road and in an attempt to pacify Hart and keep him under control he will be given a match that night in Elizabeth, NJ at the RexPlex. The recent poll here at ROHwrestling.com where the majority of fans voted for Hart's return was also taken into major consideration. Hart will be entered in the Six Man Mayhem bout. The Six Man Mayhem bout will now pit the returning Amazing Red vs. Teddy Hart vs. Jack Evans vs. Mark Briscoe vs. Jimmy Rave vs. Alex Shelley (if he is back from injury. If not someone from the Convention Card will replace him). Do we even need to hype this match?

sloggy
3-7-04, 03:42 PM
What is this ? One way communication ? I am aware that it works for you, but it doesn't for most of the people I know. They are in differents states and on different providers.
I didn't modify DNS servers, so it can't be that data is not updated yet. Except for the ROHJoe's site, I didn't find any other page I can't acess.

stevel
3-7-04, 03:58 PM
bigbluebubble.com comes up for me too - instantly.

I'll repeat - if you're having a problem accessing the site, it isn't the server, callisto. callisto is fine. Can you get to www.kittyangels.org ? That's my callisto site and it's up.

From your system, open a command prompt and type the following commands:

nslookup bigbluebubble.com

ping bigbluebubble.com

ping callisto.powweb.com

What do you get?

sloggy
3-7-04, 04:06 PM
For nslookup:
*** Can't find server name for address 192.168.1.1: Non-existent domain
*** Default servers are not available
Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.1.1

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: bigbluebubble.com
Address: 66.152.97.228
Aliases: www.bigbluebubble.com

For pinging - timeout error - it finds correct Ip though. FTP to this IP doesn't work either. :(

And yes, I turned off notification when someone reply to the thread, but I am still receiving messages.

My Callisto site was down for an hour or two on Friday, and I believe it was also down briefly early on Saturday, but it has been fine since. Oh, and I checked everyone's site listed above who said their sites were down, I got to all of them no problem. For the record, I find Powweb hosting to be excellent in terms of quality and value. The occassional hiccup is inevitable, I imagine.

Hello,

I understand you're having problems accessing callisto. The problem isn't on our end, but there appears to be some sort of conflict with your internet and our range of ip's. What I would suggest is contacting your isp and see if they can even pull up http://callisto.powweb.com. If your isp tech CAN access it, we can then narrow the issue to your local network. If using some sort of firewall, make sure it's configured conrrectly as well. I had one client running Blackice and somehow his webserver ip became one to be filtered out from his network.

I have the same problem here in NewJersey. I cant access my site at all. Can anyone please help...http://www.280east.com/cd/

I think the problem might be with Comcast..This happened once before and it took a couple of days for my site to come back..

I ran the ping and it timed out.

Also I can't ftp anything to the server, It times out.

They said there is nothing they can do and problem must be with my router. I am using the same router for 2 years and powweb for almost 2 years and I never had problem before. As stupid as it sound, it will be much cheaper and easier for me to switch web host then my internet provider :(

I'm on comcast in new jersey as well. I was messing around with my internet connection settings and I'm really not sure what I did, but I can now access my site. I tried talking to them but go nowhere with it. They blamed powweb, powweb blamed comcast....still others I know who have comcast in a different state can't get on my site either.

Guys from Jersey...The problem was comcast...This has happened to one of my sites before on powweb. It took a couple of days for my site to come back online. The other site was on terra.

I think I remember that when comcast took over the service from @ home is when I had the problem with my site and many other sites as well that would not load. I think the isp's have to update the dns settings(or something like that)every night or refresh them, comcast did not do that. I may be wrong, if anyone knows the answer please help !!! G

Ah, as I posted in the outtages section, Callisto was being dos attacked by some networks. For those of you who couldn't see it, it was your isp that was responsible. (In this case, Comcast was the culprit during that day) :) In any event, the admins lifted the filter last night and it should start resolving on your end later today.
