View Full Version : Webstats (once again)
Greetings,
I never ever have had any problems with the Powweb hosting (in the last two years), but the only thing breaking down for me are the WebStats.
This time they just stopped working after February the 20th and haven't worked a day properly since.
I have tried disabling and enabling it, but it didn't help. A while ago I had more or less the same problems, and then a member of the forum here fixed it for me.
Anyone with similar problems, or even better: a solution or tip maybe?
Thanks!
PS: Have a look @ http://www.onnovanbraam.com/webstats/ to see what I mean.
I am on Asteroid by the way.

There are numerous problems with WebStats as a program in general.
Granted this means losing the past information; but, the better option now is to enable AWStats instead. More and more people are switching and though I swore by webstats for the longest time (mainly because my old host had the same program so I was familiar with it), I did change over in January and now question why I waited.
Where you activate Webalizer, you can also activate AWStats. It will be in the same directory as Webalizer.
Or, you can do like I did at first, I installed AW on my own but then PW decided to make it available with their configs... solved my setup problems.
Thanks for the advice.
Indeed, the reason I was sticking to Webalizer because I am used to it.
I just changed it to AWStats and will have a look and see whether it it more stable than Webalizer.
*Edit: NM, found it:

*Edit 2: Wow, very very odd: AWStats is giving the same (WRONG!) values for my visits... I have a couple of statistic systems running, and I have had >1000 visitors each day for the last month, but not according to those two. :(

Well, AW and Webalizer feed off the same raw logs so I would be more apt to say that your other programs are doing their own thing. You can't get much more acurate that raw log files.
*just my observation.
No, that can't be, since I wrote one of them myself. :P
Hehe, for real: the two programs I use (one is Netstat (on of the most used free counters on the net), the other a simple but effective database system), are and have been flawless, where as AW and Webalizer have proven to suck at times. I think there is something wrong with my log files (which if I remember correctly was the problem last time with Webalizer).
Also because both the programs give the exact same wrong results for the last 3 weeks.
Will have a look into the log files.
It still doesn't work properly... I removed some of my log files, but all to no prevail.
Hmm... I just reinstalled AWStats manually, but then when I run it, it gives the following error:
Error: Couldn't open server log file "/www/o/onnovanbraam/logs/access_log.1" : No such file or directory
Setup ('./awstats.onnovanbraam.com.conf' file, web server or permissions) may be wrong.
Which is very true. I haven't seen any access logs in along time. Maybe because I had a cron that removed it (because they became too huge and Webalizer crashed on it). Will look at it for a couple of days and see whether something starts working.
Read this Awstats Fix (http://forum.powweb.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=33269) post and I think you'll find the answer for this problem.
Do you have subdomains created by an .htaccess file? If so, those subs are not being logged nor counted in your stats.
I run both Webstats and Awstats. Haven't checked the Webstats in awhile and notived that my last update was on March 1, at 10:53 AM. Awstats keeps chugging along.
I'llo leave the Webstats cron info and directory, and check it in April!
As long as Awstats updates every half hour, I am really not that concerned losing the Webstats, since it's really a poor statistics program.
For me it doesn't really matter which of the two runs, as long as one of them IS running. At the moment I don't really understand what is going on.
From what I can guess it looks like I just do not have any access logs, only cron (error) logs, error logs and a file named '.nfsAfffff42b4.4', 8617KB big, which might be the access log, but why on gods green earth would it be called that.
Thanks for the tip (jj) but I don't get that error...

Okay, thanks for explaining that:
BUT the question now is: why don't I have any access logs? :(
There's just no access logs to be found, anywhere, never.
This is getting frustrating.
Contact support and explain your problem (be sure to tell them your domain name), this is a problem that can not be fixed by the users of this forum.

I jumped in, checked Onno's LOGS directory, and saw the error_log, but a temp file that replaced th access_log. I renamed it and hopefully it will jump-start the rollover to an access_log, and then the daily back-up as well.
If this doesn't weork after tonight's roll-over, support will need to be contacted. I have never seen this before!
sandy came to the rescue and everything is working as it should again.
Big thanks sandy. :D
