View Full Version : AMD Athlon XP?
One of my family's computers is slowly dying, and we're looking for a new one. Best Buy has some great deals on a computer brand called AMD Athlon XP, so I was wondering if anyone's had experience with that brand. The computers we have right now are all Dell, and we haven't had any major problems with them (besides the one dying, but it's about 5 years old). Any input on AMD Athlon XP would be great!
Thanks,
~Arwen
AMD manufactures processors, but not whole pcs. In general, they provide much higher-bang-for-the-buck versus an Intel processor. I have been using them for the last six years, with no CPU-related problems, and I have several PCs. Save yourself some money and go with the AMD solution (good advice for anybody, in my opinion).
Note that Dell is a strictly-Intel pc maker (they're rare nowadays -- most other makers use both companies' processors). So if you stay Dell, you're still paying going to be paying for the Intel name.
Just my 0.02USD. Good luck with your selection!

I have used AMD cpu's for nearly 10 years..no problems at all
I currentl have an xp2000 (1.6 Ghz) running on a home built PC. The only thing to watch out for is that they can run hot so make sure that the pc you buy has a heat detector for the cpu as well as a reliable internal case fan ( it will come with a cpu fan) and if there is no s/w to monitor cpu. motherboard, fans etc then there are many free ones on the net

I LOVE AMD! But as Paul mentioned, they can run hot and that wonderful sensor will make a high-pitched scream of pain to get you to turn off the computer and finally take a break from your work. It happened to me a few times as I have my computer running most of the time.
Remember to open your tower and clean out the dust around the fan. The dust collects like a lint fussball and will insulate the hardware, keeping it warm, which is bad. So, clean the dirt and take occasional breaks from the computer and your processor should be happy. :)
I leave my boxes on for long periods of time, sometimes 24x7, and have never had a heating problem. Just have a good heatsink/fan and you should never have problems. I should point out that Intel processors get hot, too. That's just how it is with modern processors!

I haven't had problems for years until just recently. My computer screamed at me twice in the last two weeks. Maybe I need to clean my tower! Or the fan needs replacing - it is two years old. Well, it doesn't look dirty, but it is warm in this office with so many computers running.
My friend fried a brand new AMD because he didn't have a good heatsink. It can happen to any processor, but the newer ones are more likely to get hot.
Most of my systems are running AMD processors. My server is on an Athlon XP running 1.8 ghz. I have one XP system running an Athlon 1ghz with Win98 and another XP on regular AMD 500's.
I prefer the AMD line versus the Intel due to cost and more bang for the buck. My vote is go for it, don't walk run to your nearest provider. Might even consider the new 64 bit if you have the moola for it. Have a friend running one and he's grossly enthused with the performance.

You know I love my AMD athlon 2800 as well! But the mistake I made was went cheap on memory. Got some generic pc2100, big mistake. I think the most important thing next to your cpu, would be your memory. Get brand name and get something nice like 3200 or 4000.... AMD's Do run hotter, but as long as you keep them dust free you should be fine. Im o/c'ing mine and its runnin at about 38 C, haven't had any stablity problems whatso ever. I would definatly suggest AMD, like some else said, more bang for your buck. ANd depending on what kind of use you have for your computer... you might wanna try an AMD FX... those 64 bitters look sweet. (I personally built my computer for gaming and now that these fx's are out, I want to see what there all about!)

OH another thing, no matter what ya do as far as cpu, its probably a good idea to add a fan or to to the case. That makes a huge difference. Make sure the air goes in the front and out the back. I like to use the stealth fans so its a lot quieter. Good Luck!

I think most of us here love our AMD's. Maybe blueflowers will make a fan club site for AMD. :D

Hi all ... I am new to PowWeb. Did a lot of research before I landed here. Nice community ... which is actually one feature that sold me on Pow Web
I have a 3 year old 1 GB AMD, 512k Mb, Win XP and I keep saying I should upgrade to keep up with things ... but the darn thing runs so well and so fast that I can't justify the expense. This would never happen with an Intel .... I've been a computer tech for ...........ummmmmm ....24 years ... and I have yet to find anything as the AMD. Mine has never had a heat problem. Occasionally, the bearing in the chip fans burn out and that's what makes the noise. Buy another fan and you are noise free.
