I had been getting the following error for 2 days (seems to coincide with the Email Server Software changes):
There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your User Name or Password was rejected. Server Response: '-ERR Authentication failed.'.(Account: 'UserID', POP3 Server: 'pop.stlukes17.org', Error Number: 0x800ccc92).
Used to work fine. Stopped working a couple of days ago. OPS shows last login: cucipop at 04/06/04 6:15pm...
I have tried many things to get this to work: I deleted and re-added my Outlook account. I disabled and re-enabled my SMTP service. I changed the POP3 server name to mail02.powweb.com. And pushed and prodded in minor ways that I can't even recall. Ooh yeah.... and I even did nothing for a full day hoping it was a temporary problem.
So I hadn't been able to get around this Authentication problem until I went back to basics. I had been using 2 Capital letters in my UserID. I changed my userid to all lower case and my problem went away (e.g., from UserID to userid). Hard to believe I spent so much time following all the email threads/leads/tips etc and this simple change was all that was needed. So I changed the port setting back and unticked the 'My server requires authentication' box; and verified that the only change needed was to eliminate the use of Upper Case letters in my userid.
So that's what worked for me. Hopes this helps someone else.
