View Full Version : Server switch??!?!?!?!? Cepheid to Charon?
Was there a problem with Cepheid that I didn't know about? (I've searched the forums and couldn't find any announcements or recent outages)
Earlier this week, I was on cepheid.powweb.com. Now after looking at OPS, I find our server is now charon.powweb.com.
Was the name changed? My webftp to cepheid and charon find exactly the same files?!?
Sorry if I'm missing something, but shouldn't Powweb make customers aware that something major like a server name will be changing.
And yes, before you ask, I have looked at the History tab of OPS to see if an e-mail was sent. It wasn't.
Thanks for any insight anybody can offer.

Interesting...and they both have the same IP address
Interesting, but frustrating!
The reason I noticed the switch is that our site just went down for 15 minutes and I was in OPS making sure I hadn't missed any announcements.
Anybody else on Cepheid out there that can check OPS to see if their server name changed?

Some of our legacy systems (the ones that have ftp and http on the same machine) have been combined over time as the number of customers decrease or as they need replaced and are replaced by more powerful machines. This keeps the number of servers down so they are easier to maintain by our sysadmins.
cepheid was down because it was being upgraded this morning. but yea, it was combined with charon like 2 weeks ago.
Thanks Jesse. But, again, communication is the key. A general statement of "Some of our legacy systems (the ones that have ftp and http on the same machine) have been combined over time as the number of customers decrease or as they need replaced and are replaced by more powerful machines." does not cut it.
If you're going to make a major change, you need to talk to the customers affected. By talk, I mean a message in the announcement folders stating the what change is, the affect on customers, and solutions to any problems that may come up because of the change.
Am I asking for too much?
In the case of this server, what should I be entering in the webftp program, cepheid or charon?
(I thought we were moving toward server names like WWW01.)
What server should my MySQL scripts be looking at? I believe I used localhost as the server, but just in case.....
When mercury was combined with andromeda I did not have to change anything, all went absolutely smoothly ... I guess both IPs now go to the new server, mysql (mysqlxx.powweb.com) is on a different dedicated machine (check OPS/packages/mysql for details), same with mail (mailxx.powweb.com) and you can of course use mail.yourdomain.cno or ftp.yourdomain.cno - just like before the "merger". In my opinion there should be nothing you have to worry about.
when i read this, i was relieved because i too noticed that my original server was orion and OPS now reports it as mars. 1 question: will orion.powweb.com still be a valid address?

Well, I WAS going to say "yes, orion.powweb.com would still be valid". However, when I gave it a try with http://orion.powweb.com/ it came back with a 500 Internal Error.
Hmmmmmmmmm
hmmm ... me too. mars.powweb.com came back ok. however, i am still able to log into orion using my FTP accnt. mars as well. <begin spooky music>
When the old servers are combined, both hostnames are retained on the 'gaining' server. So which machine is retired and which machine takes on the sites is irrelevant.
Servers are only combined when the total number of sites would still be less than they used to host at their peak. So you shouldn't notice any performance or configuration differences if/when your server is merged with another.
Eventually, through attrition, all of the constellation servers will be retired. Whether all the hostnames will be retained I couldn't say (Jesse?), but if the constellation hostnames were eventually dropped and those sites switched to a www hostname, we would certainly give all affected clients plenty of notice, both by email and here in the forum.
That is not something that is likely to happen soon though, and again, it wouldn't happen without plenty of advance notice.
