Why is the .swf extension blocked as an email attachment?.

I realise flash files can be manipulated to carry harm like any file can. .zip are more easily and more commonly known to be carriers than swf. Heck, you can zip any harmful file. Are they going to block .zip to?. Or is it because of popularity weighing on the server?. I can send a 240Kb flash slideshow or 10 images at 760Kb?. Just can't see the need to block swf.

Well, .swf is directly executable, .zip is not.

simply put the swf in a zip and you are fine
