View Full Version : free antivirus
I'm curious, any recommendations for free (or at least, nearly free) antivirus solutions? I uninstalled McAfee from my system permanently a little while ago due to the insane number of issues it caused. I will never EVER purchase another McAfee or Norton product. err..anyway...
I'm feeling a bit vulnerable to virii now, so I'm looking for a replacement, hopefully free. And not free as in mail-in-rebate. :) I'm running WinXP and Win2003. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I used to have AVG from grisoft (http://www.grisoft.com). I liked it and never had any problems with it on XP. You can also go to www.download.com and read some other reviews (and see other programs).
Avast (http://www.avast.com/) offers a free version of it's AV Software.
Like BWG, I use the free version of AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/) and have had good luck with it. The updates for it are usually quite small (after the first updates) and it allows for auto-updating if you want to use it.

Tried this one http://www.free-av.com/ but often when you go to live update it has to re-download the whole program again. At 5 megs it got to annoying.
This Avast 4 is ok to but there's something watery about it. http://www.avast.com/i_idt_226.html
I would agree with the fellas and say AVG takes the cake. http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php I run it alongside of Norton Corporate edition (yes I have alot of ram) with no problems at all.
hmmm...I guess AVG is the way to go. This part of their web page kinda got me, though:
AVG Free Edition CAN NOT BE INSTALLED ON SERVERS FOR ANY REASON. IT CAN NOT BE INSTALLED IN ANY NETWORKED ENVIRONMENT!
'Any networked environment'? If you have a dialup connection to the internet, isn't that a network environment? Not to mention sneakernet. But blah, this isn't exactly the first EULA I've blown off. :D

AGV after Dec 31 04 will no longer support updates. :(
Will Grisoft be offering a paid subscription?

Grisoft is not doing away with the free edition, just the version 6.0 free edition.
All current AVG 6.0 Free users will be able to upgrade to the new AVG Free Edition before December 31, 2004
You can read more about the upcoming changes here http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/5443/lng/us
man, almost gave me a heart attack. Thanks for the information, I would never have probably noticed.
