I'm thinking of starting a business (hosted on powweb), and might go with either of the two choices above for website layout. Just wondering what everyone's thoughts (good or bad) on either osc2nuke or oscnukelite are?

My plans were to use osCommerce and have a community based bulletin board. I'm not real crazy on the NUKE look, but I like the idea of having everything integrated - osCommerce, bulletin board, etc.

Do you guys think this is more trouble than it's worth? In other words would I be better off keeping everything seperate?

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. ;)

I wouldn't trust anything *nuke* with sensitive information such as as customers info and credit cards.
I have a website where I am using phpnuke and oscommerce for the store. Phpnuke has too many flaws to keep it integrated with oscommerce.
If you want to have a forum on your website, you can download Phpbb (http://www.phpbb.com) and customize the look of it to match your store.

I appreciate your opinion. :)

This just re-inforces the "feeling" I've been having about trying either of the two. It seems they are not quite ready for primetime just yet. The only website I've seen that uses oscnukelite is sweetquads.com. I can't seem to find any others that use either solution (although I'm sure there are).

natural - I checked out your website http://www.naturalhealthland.com - I take it this is your phpnuke and oscommerce site? Looks great. ;) It also has the look that I want to go with. I want to display a few products on the main page, along with a news module like you have. How difficult would it be to have a phpBB module on the main page? Just something that would list the latest 10 topics...

I also see you have phpBB on your site...Now do customers have to sign-up and login for both your store and bulletin board?

phpbb forum comes with phpnuke. Having a module display the latest topics is very easy, it comes with it. I think it displays 5, but it's easy to tweak it to display 10.
Customers have to sign up twice, I would never use the same info for the forum and for the store. Too much of a security risk and a big hassel if they want to change something (password, preferences). The work overhead wouldn't justify it.

On the other hand, when I started this website I didn't know anything about php (even that it existed). Had I known more, I would never have chosen PhpNuke. I would suggest PostNuke (http://www.postnuke.com/) . Do a search on these forums for phpnuke postnuke and you'll see what I mean.

Anyway, I could change my website to PostNuke now, but I modified the code of PhpNuke quite a lot, so I am not worried so much about it.

I've been checking into both postnuke and phpnuke the last couple of days, and it does seem that postnuke is favored more. When I get around to it I think I will go with postnuke.

In my checking I came across this site (http://www.samstech.net/) which is another CMS called Fenix that at one time was working on a postnuke - oscommerce bridge. It appears they dropped that idea, but bridged oscommerce with their own CMS - Fenix. It looks to me like Fenix started development at the beginning of the year. At this point I think Fenix is un-proven, but will keep my eye on it.

I understand your concerns with security, but still like the idea of having, at least for me, a seamless transition between oscommerce and a bulletin board. So if a customer had logged into either their BB or their oscommerce account, they would in fact be logged in to both.

For now I'm not going to worry about it, and keep everything seperate. I will keep my eye on Fenix, and I also heard that some other postnuke peeps are working on a postnuke oscommerce bridge.

Another Q for you. :D How many databases are you using for your site? Do you have phpnuke, oscommerce, and phpbb all in one database, or do you have a seperate database for each?

I am using 2 databases. One for phpnuke and the other for oscommerce.
It shouldn't be too hard to modify phpbb authentication to go through oscommerce. See how phpnuke does it with the phpbb module and go from there. It's just an idea.

As natural I also use two db's and use osCommerce and postnuke seperatly... I though of using a wrap or a converted os-lite.. but as I have expirenced with forks.. they tend to upgrade frequently in the beginning of their life.... but later on....

By working with the header, footer etc you'll be able to make a good integration don't doubt it.. believe it!

osCommerce is one of the best programs I ever have come across. I strongly recommed livehelp.com as another great "free" program/script.

The use of two db's is a bit essential as there is a greate chance for you ****ing up postnuke db....hehe...

You'll understand this when you have experimented with 50 different modules and 3-4 upgrades of Postnuke :)

Keep em seperated!

And thx to all the developers of osCommerce and contributions...!

PS: Fenix wil be a commercial cms.... You'll have to pay subscriptions for getting you hand on new modules etc... (based on previous history) There are two strong coders behind Fenix... but I don't think it will ever match postnuke as the growth of Postnuke will exceed Fenix and thereby contributions, fixes etc... Fenix will be a great, but limited cms... I did subscribe for portalzine modules/blocks, but as MagicX moved to Fenix these modules are worthless when it comes to keeping up with the development of Postnuke core. (moving to pnRender etc...for faster rendering of pages) The modules cannot be altered due to the ownership of MagicX... (hehe.. he forked it from Nuke etc...)

Well.. just my opinions...

Thx for the tips on using two DB's. I didn't really know much about content management systems until the last couple of days, and the more I look at postnuke the better it looks.

When I get around to signing up with PowWeb, I'm probably gonna need some "guidance" with setting up osC, and pn. Maybe the $15 finders fee for existing members might be enough to entice someone...? :)
