View Full Version : 404 File Not Found on newly created site
Hi,
I just bought my 2nd POWWEB site and am getting a
404 File Not Found
error when I click the osCommerce link on the HTTP ops page.
Is anyone else seeing this problem?
Could it be a problem that the new site I created in Powweb (but didn't request registration) is an existing site I have on another provider? I was hoping to work on the osCommerce setup, transfer the other site to POWWEB, then switch over the DNS.
Thanks,
-Brian
I don't understand the "new site is an existing site" part of your question. Is it that you have an existing site and want to move it to PowWeb and add an osCommerce store to it?
I don't know what would cause the OPS link to show a "not found", but I prefer not to use that anyway. I downloaded the current milestone from oscommerce.com, unpacked it on my PC and uploaded it. Then I opened the /install folder and followed the prompts.
Note that the OPS install puts the store by default in a strange path on your site - you will want to change that. For my site, I put the store at the top level (not under catalog).

I'm pretty sure that the problem you are having is similar to what I encountered when I tried installing osCommerce for the first time as well. It might be that the server that your hosting package is on has an incorrect path to the osCommerce install from the OPS page. This can only be fixed by emailing support. You could download osCommerce though and set it up that way rather than going through OPS.
Stevel,
The long story is I have an active site, lets call it www.mysite.com.
It's on a non-Powweb server.
I want to use a new Powweb based site, also calling it www.mysite.com. On the new server I'll 1st setup osCommerce, load it up with our store products, test. Then load the non-powweb site onto the new host. Eventually closing the old host acct and turning on the new powweb version (changing DNS).
With Powweb, is it possible to create a new site with the same sitename as an exiting site? I see powweb would delete the temp sitename after a month. I may need more time than that to setup osCommerce and move all my old site files to the new server.
Does the above make sense?
Thanks for your insight,
-Brian
Thanks for that tip.
Last night I cancelled the new account until I find out if I can create a powweb site with the same name as an existing site on another host...
Thanks,
-Brian
