Equipment:
Insipron - Belkin G wireless pcmcia (http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=1&Section_Id=&pcount=&Product_Id=136500)
Lattitude - 2wire B wireless pcmcia (http://2wire.com/home/adap_fil.html#wireless)
DSL - 2wire 1000 (http://google-cnet.com.com/2Wire_HomePortal_1000SW_-_wireless_router/4505-3319_7-30618212.html)
Service - SBC
In short, I can't get the two laptops to see eachother. They can both get to the net; but, they can't get to the other computer.
When I set the Inspiron to ad hoc, of course the x is on the card till I get the Lattitude configured. When I go to add an ad hoc to the Lattitude, I DO get an image of two computers with the echo signal going out and the Inspiron does finally show that there is a network. The Lattitude does show the channel and realizes that I don't have WEP enabled. It DOES say that the Radio connection is Peer to Peer and it does give the right network. If I enable zero config, the only network it finds is the router and at that I get 100% signal strength. The ad hoc doesn't show any signal strength nor does the MS network monitor icon show connection. Both are set to peer to peer as well.
Now... my phone calls:
SBC supplies the 2wire hardware but insists, "We don't deal with home networking. If you can't get online, we can help you there but we don't network."
2wire: "We don't support Microsoft networking issues. As long as you can get on to the internet, that's what we are providing." Yet at the same time, in their control panel for the router, it DOES mention home networking.
Dell: They want money and since the O/S's are OEM, I can't call MS.
I've tried to allow Remote Assistance but it won't get through the router. I've tried to allow TightVNC (another form of RA) but it too won't get through the router. I can mail to myself and be able to control one from the other but from the outside world, both are a no go.
The only thing I did find that worked was program sharing via MSN. RA won't work through MSN but program sharing will.
If anybody would like to take a stab at it, cool. I'm also willing to make a phone call *or two or four* if that's what it takes. All I know is that the Inspiron hard drive is dying (again - last time as in November or so) and if it weren't for a 12 gig file, I could just back up on cd. Of course, I'll also take ideas via here; but, in all honesty, my patience with these machines is about to make me change my words above my avatar back to "laptop is to frisbee as.." and I've got two of 'em this time. :D
Thanks
