View Full Version : Transferring Outlook Express e-mails to new comp
My family's oldest computer, which runs Windows 98, has been slowly dying for the past couple months. We just got a new computer with Windows XP a couple days ago, but before setting it up I'm trying to back up my sister's Outlook Express e-mails. The problem is that the only option for "Exporting" is to export messages to another mail client. I was able to export (and then import, just to make sure it worked) the address book without problems, but the e-mails are a different story. I know with Microsoft Outlook one can just select all the e-mails, hit the copy button, go to the folder where one wants to put the messages, and hit paste--without having any difficulties. Tried that in OE; doesn't work. Also tried saving each message individually in .eml format, but OE 1) Doesn't support that extension, and 2) Doesn't have a way of importing messages from a folder, only from a different mail client.
Any suggestions are most welcome! Thanks,
~Arwen
Edit: solved problem myself, actually (I think). The moderators can delete this unless they feel it might be of value to someone else...
Try this

why not forward to all the e-mails at once, sending them to yourself and then check your messages on the new pc. thats what i'd do at least.
ok
let's say i want to do this.
I have over 10.000 mails in outlook.
wow, why would you have that many?

With that many mails that you want to transfer and archive they ought to be split into a logical arrangement of folders, either date, topic, source etc. Then e-mail (forward) them to an new account (created via Powweb's Ops) in those batches to make re-archiving them simpler. Finally, set up the account on the new machine to receive from this new account and download and save them in logical manner. (Well with that number I'd do that or have already filed a paper version!) Don't try and send them all in one day, spread them over the week-end or Powweb system may flag you as a spammer with that many outgoing e-mails.

My machine's version of Outlook Express (version 6 packaged with IE6SP1) has no problem exporting, importing, and opening .eml files. I just open an Explorer window on the other side of the screen, then drag-and-drop betwixt OE and Explorer. The email's subject becomes the file name, and the date received becomes that file's creation date. Then I archive my emails to CD-ROM so I can have a permanent record of correspondence that doesn't go away if I move to a different machine.

That drag and drop seems like a lot of work. I use incredimail (not for the flassy crap) but because I can back up my address book and emails in 3 mouse clicks. Everything gets exported to a cab file.
Simple.

This script, Xeoport (http://xeoman.com/code/php/xeoport), seems like a good idea. I've d/l'ed it, but I haven't tried it yet, I don't know how well it would handle 10,000 emails at a time, especially for backup purposes.
As long as both machine have the same version of OE (V6) you can just move the files over. Search on your PC and find the mail files. The indox is Inbox.dbx - the rest will be in that same folder. Then copy them to the new PC overwriting the empty ones. I have done this many times to move existing email to another machine.
i have no problem back-ing up my mails. i use e-backup.
why split the archive ? use a CD.

Actually, you can highlight everything and drag multiple emails at once. And the backup is structured on disk any way I like with any names I like. It's also searchable from the windows "search for files containing" dialog.

My original intent was to help OE users like Arwen export emails more than to recommend OE over other programs.
But I'm always glad to hear a good program recommendation, otherwise I never would have discovered UltraEdit32!
