Has database access changed ?

I have just tried to back up a PHPBB2 forum database using the facilities within the forum software and I keep getting a 500 error. I wondered if the access to the database has changed from what it used to be when I could use the forum software to perform the backup.

If there has been some policy change, are there any alternative methods of backing up the database, its about 26 meg at the moment.
