View Full Version : my computer is totally dead!!!
Hi,
Believe or not, I sneezed in front of my computer and I don't think I hit anything. But at the very same second I sneezed, my computer started to reboot by itself. And now I find I cannot start my computer at all in any mode. I tried all mode (safe mode with command prompt, Last Known Good Configuration, etc.) I am not really sure if my sneez caused this problem or that was just a strange coincidence.
When I try to start my computer in safe mode, it always stops at the line:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\System 32\DRIVERS\agp440.sys
Then after a few minutes, I see the hp logo and the computer stays there forever.
Could anybody help me out to revive my computer? Does this look like my hard broke down?
My computer system information is as follows:
OS: XP
Browser IE6
CPU:Intel Pentium4, 2.53GHz
DDR SDRAM 512MB
80GB Ultra DMA Hard Drive

Sounds like maybe a sasser worm. Check microsoft (and I think network associates) for a fix. Also, if using windows, go to the windowsupdate site and download all critical updates.
According to Symantec, Sasser tries to stop the user from shutting down the system, not from being able to boot
From Symantec (http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.sasser.f.worm.html)
4. Uses the AbortSystemShutdown API to hinder the attempts to shut down or restart the computer

And if you can't boot your pc, there's no way you're gonna be able to shut it down.. :D

Looks like it's hanging on the AGP driver - did you recently change your graphics card? Maybe the fan is dying/has died? Just speaking out loud here...
thank you for responding.
The HP computer has no startup disk or anything.
Instead, they provide a button (F10) on the keyboard to recover the system,
but it does nothing now. I can't start up, i just get an empty blank screen.
Do you still think this is the sasser worm?
Is there anything i can do except throw out the computer and all my data?
Can I take my hard disk to a computer repair store and recover anything?
Do you get any video display to the screen at all? As Tom pointed out, it seems to be hanging at the video display driver load.
I hate the way HP did the OS restore function, if you need to replace the hard drive then you have to buy a new copy of the OS.
When I push "F10" key (HP recovery key) on boot, it stops in a blank blue screen. Then after a few minutes, it shows an error page saying "KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR".
It also says at the bottom of the same page as follows:
Technical information:
***STOP: 0x0000007A (0xE11FE7D0, 0xC0000098, 0xBF8529CC, 0x03005860)
***win32k.sys - Address BF8529CC base at BF800000, DateStamp 3b5ee2e6
Can anybody interprete this error message to find out where the stop (hang) happens, based on the stop address?
I had an HP XP machine that never would restore from the F10 prompt either. And worse, I had ordered the CDs from them (for $10) and the system would never restore from the CDs either. There was always one error or another. The HP restore process is fatally flawed. I would never buy an HP machine if you need to rely on their software. In my case I did not need their software so it did not matter. But I learned my lesson about HP machines - whether you have the CD or not. Their image restore does not work. Sorry for the bad news, but those are the facts.

Maybe this link (http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prmd_stp_fvlq.asp) or this link (http://www.osr.com/ddk/ddtools/bccodes_2vjb.htm) could help. I typed KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR into google and these are just two of the returned results.
Just an off the wall question, but have you tried booting from a floppy?
my advice is to get a new hard drive, make it master and the one in there dont hook up till later, then but windows xp home for i think 200 or pro for 300 i think install it in new drive then hook up old drive as slave and see what you can recover from it thats what i would say, and never never never buy a comp make your own its easy easy easy
Hi,
I tried HP Recovery CD. I did this after completely reformatting my hard and still I get the same error message saying "KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR". It looks like my graphics card has problem as you pointed. Will this can be fixed if I replace the graphics card? You said "fan might have died". What fan are you referring? Or should I just dump this whole system?

Did you try uninstalling and reinstalling the video drivers? The drivers may be corrupted. You can check the manufacturer website for an updated driver. If you updated your OS, the driver may not work. Just a thought.
Thank you for your advice.
But my computer just freezes in blue screen and has never been able to boot into windows. I don't know how to uninstall anything since all I get was blue screen as described in previous postings.
Does anybody know what I have to do if my AGP card is damaged?

Is your DDR SDRAM 512MB one physical stick or two 256 sticks or other? If one of the RAM sticks goes, you won't be able to do anything.

Someone else solved a similar problem with RAM. I was discussing your problem with Nick (my new PHP/MySQL guy) who also thinks that RAM may be the problem. Maybe you can borrow RAM from a friend to test in your computer.

A page of kernel data was not found in the pagefile and could not be read into memory. This might be due to incompatible disk or controller drivers, firmware, or hardware.
very possible it is memory, but also could be harddrive.
Believe or not, I sneezed in front of my computer and I don't think I hit anything. But at the very same second I sneezed, my computer started to reboot by itself.
I normally hate reading or worse yet being the one behind stupid posts but I just had to make this one:
Wow! A virus that transfers to different computers by a human sneeze? -Now that's got to take some talent in coding. :D
The reason I mentioned about my sneezing was because I was wondering if some hardware in my computer got shaken or blown up and this might have caused the problem.
So are u saying this is absolutely a nonsense to think a hardware in a computer might get damaged by kicking or shaking (I might have moved my feet somehow hard when I sneezed.)?
I hate to be called stupid although I might be. I still hate people who think they are smarter than others when they are not.
the chance your sneeze had absolutely anything to do with the issue you're reporting is miniscule to nonexistent. That doesn't make you stupid. It's just a funny coincidence (well, funny is in the eye of the beholder, I guess). Sounds like your O/S is hosed to me, but I'm not following your issues too closely.

skyblue, I think that some people found the timing of your sneeze amusing, and though small, there is a possibility that you could get your hardware wet and damage something. I would mention it to a tech when explaining a problem, even if it wasn't helpful. It is better to give too much info than not enough.
I am still thinking that your problem could be:
1) Windows OS is corrupted. Reformat the hard drive even if you need to do this in another tower.
2) RAM is damaged. Try borrowing RAM from another tower or buying RAM.
3) The hard drive is damaged. Try borrowing one from another tower.
4) The video card is damaged. Try borrowing one.
5) The video drivers are corrupted. But you cannot boot up to install them on your existing computer.
Too bad you have HP instead of a custom PC. Even borrowing items from a friend's computer could be a pain. You may want to ask a local PC tech to test hardware in your computer, if you are unable or unwilling to boot up in DOS, reformat your drive and reinstall the OS and drivers. You may want the tech to try to access your hard drive on another PC to backup files.
Good luck.
I have to agree with Yvette. There have been so many times over the past years I've touched, pressed, leaned, pushed something and at the same time lights go out, thunder claps, lightning hits, power fails, etc. that I wonder if what I did was the cause. Take the moment and enjoy the uniqueness of your action. It will make for a good tech moment in the future. Laughter is a great answer to seriousness.
Thank you for your advice. I try to get angry righteously. But everytime I show my anger, I regret it later. I guess it is not easy to get angry and still be able to justify the anger later and not regret it.
It was just an amazing coincidence for me. It was hard to believe that it has nothing to do with this problem.
Thank you, YvetteKuhns, for your very thorough advice. I already tried reformatting my entire hard drive, using FDISK and the formatting went through successfully. Then, I tried to install Windows but at the very end, failed with the same error msg. This will eliminate #1, and maybe #3 too?
Yesterday, I had a chance to purchase a good used computer system for a good price. So I did. Since I am not in a hurry to fix this HP computer. I would like to rebuild this computer into a custom built. By doing that, I hope I can learn about computer hardware better. I will keep posting my progresses and questions in this thread.
Hmm, still I am afraid of sneezing, farting, or anything not decent in front of my computer since then :D
I would use diagnostic programs to check each components one by one.
The makers of components (hard disk, video card...) may have
free diagnostic tools on their site and/or on the driver disks.
(There are many third party tools both free and commercial, too)
You may want to use Linux/Unix based tools, as well.
Just booting Knoppix from CD-ROM may tell you something.
Also, You can hook up a component of HP machine to another machine,
and run diagnostic tests.
But first thing I may try is the in depth disk test with surface scan
if you havn't done that yet.
As far as sneezing goes, it may have provoked the trouble.
Some sort of shock may short circuit the reset mechanism,
influence voltage of main power line,
or something else so that it reboots accidentally.
If that happens without proper write-back cache flushing,
you may end up with corrupt files, or FAT.
Maybe the disk surface was damaged by that, too.
Since there are so many possibilities, I would not totally exclude sneezing
from potential cuase of the failure.
To be honest, I found the sneezing part a little comical,
although I do have sympathy with your frustration
and I understand you may not in the mood to appreciate any joke about that.
I tend to laugh and have good time even when I'm experiencing
pretty serious problems.
Also, I can be angry and having fun same time.
My mental OS is multi emotional tasking system.
For me, these emotions are not exclusive. They can co-exist happily (for ever). :)

I know someone who sneezed and dropped his laptop. He broke the screen and it would cost almost the price of the laptop to fix it. He was hooking up to an external monitor for a while! Another person accidentally spilled coffee on his keyboard, then his keys would stick.
My son sneezes on the keyboard and screen of the laptop and snacks while playing games. Never eat potato chips and touch keys. And don't sneeze in your tower when plugged in to test hardware. :D

Had a similar problem with my laptop (Toshiba Staellite pro 6100 series). After 72 hrs of not sleeping practically I bought another hard disk and since then I have been sleeping.
I may not be in a hurry to get any system apart from Toshiba although their customer service after the one year limited warranty period is horrible. All the nice conversations I have always had with them each time I call from Nigeria and even their offer to replace my machine if need be after they couldn't resolve a problem disappeared the very month the one year warranty period expired. I was shocked beyond words and even asked repeatedly if I should simply trash the machine and buy another one, to which I kept being told, 'sorry sir, it's company policy". I kept asking if company policy supports stopping any form of assistance a customer could get, afterall the machine isn't perfect and full of flaws that are periodically updated from their website.
My lesson, stick with Toshiba since I learnt a lot during the period I had computer problems (I can actually make things that Toshiba told me won't work, work) and get another hard disk if I experience the type our friend here just experienced. Sometimes it took more than 7 hrs to attempt reformating as against 1 1/2 hrs or less yet at the end that same message about a config file either damaged or missing appears.
Is there a near perfect machine out there? I would like to know and like to buy.
