View Full Version : MySQL on local WinME machine
I'm running MySQL and Apache on my WinME computer at home. Both versions are fairly new. I downloaded them less than a month ago. Here's the problem.
Everything works fine most of the time, but about every sixth or seventh query, I get a long delay between hitting ENTER and getting results. It's like everything freezes for 30-45 seconds...then my results come back. Normally the query results snap right up.
It doesn't matter whether I'm using MySQL from a DOS window, running PhPMyAdmin, or executing a MySQL query in a PhP test page. It doesn't matter what the query is, either. Simple, complex. All same. About every sixth time it goes into SLOMO.
I've already uninstalled and reinstalled MySQL once. No help.
None of this happens with MySQL online, and it's not a devastating problem. I'd just like to know why it happens and if I can fix it.

I didn't even know you could run MySQL on WinME.
Yeah, I just checked the MySQL site and it doesn't have Windows ME listed only Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP.
Sure you can run MySQL on WinME. I've been running it about a month now. You don't even have to start up Apache. But I usually do. To test PhP/MySQL pages and stuff.
I didn't have this little MySQL hangup at first, either. Ran smoothly all the time, if memory serves me. Well, like I said...it's not a big problem.
There's not a lot of difference between ME and 98, from what I hear. I never had 98, so I don't know for sure.
I'm running 98 (first edition at that) and have seen ME, but personally have stuck with 98. I didn't really like the way ME was set up :)
I offer my sincere condolences... but you might want to try Win 2000 or XP :) I use 2000 and it is basically the same as 98 but doesn't crash, and works! I haven't used XP, but I know that it is a bit different.
Just a suggestion :)
I help a good number of people with their Win9X machines regarding use and setup in Win 98 and a little in WinME. My feeling is that WinME was designed for entemologists. You gotta love bugs.

Ha ha. :) I've never used win ME either, but i've heard that I don't want to. :) 2000 works excellently for me.

I'm a computer hacker. Ok defintion time!
I do not destroy computers. I do not send trojans or viruses to people. I don't do anything that a common "hacker" does. Basically, I expand my knowledge as much as possible in the computer world.
Ok ... from a hackers view ... Windows 98 SE is the most stable (and maybe the best version of Windows). However, I like some features that WinME has that 98 doesn't have. I hate XP, 2000, and anything powered by an NT machine.
Not to start a completely irrelevant argument here... but Win 98 seemed to crash a lot for me. Win 2000 is pretty much the same user interface, etc, but doesn't crash.

Oh no! Windows 98 second edition is the most stable. I've seen many boxes with Windows 2000 on it, and it's horrible. The task manager is simply retarded. I tried to end task, and I got an error message such as: "Couldn't end task; the program is not responding". The whole point of ALT+CTRL+DEL is to end task, and you know somethings wrong when it says you can't end the task because it's not reposnding.
I am referring to second edition, because I know first edition is even worse. There's obviously no point in arguing, everyone is intitled to his own incorrect opinion ;)
