I would like information on transferring software to my new computer. I have Microsoft Project on a Windows 98 computer and would like to transfer to a Win XP computer. I no longer have the original disk. Can this be done?
Can this be done?
There is a 99.9% chance that the answer to that would be NO.
But if you want to try, then copy the complete "Project" folder and all files, then on the new computer, put them in the exact same directory structure as the original. For example, if "Project" is in C:\Program Files\Project then create the same directories (folders) as the original and copy all of the files into them.
Being that this is for an MS product, your chances of this working are only about .1 % but it never hurts to give it a try.

I've had good luck with transferring the files over like that, but the big difference is that none of the registry settings will be transferred and it won't be installed at all. You can double click and run the project.exe file though and it should work. Being that it's Windows98 there probably aren't too many other user directories that the program installed files into. You also won't have the file associations set up by copying the files over that way.
your biggest problem will be any DLLs that aren't in the project folder. Hopefully the program has verbose error messages, though, so you could go back one-by-one, find the missing DLLs and transfer them.
Also, you may want to copy to following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/software/microsoft
and look for a key called 'project' or 'MS-Project' or something. This'll probably contain at least some of your settings and whatnot. You could just export the key from your installed machine and then import it to the other one.
It still may not work, but it's worth a shot.
hello,
If you badly need that program to work on your new PC, you can do something,
but it's not "in a fly" at all :-(
- using Partition Magic, create on the new PC a new primary partition FAT32
- make a Drive Image / Norton Ghost image of the partition where Win98 system
is installed on the old PC.
- from that image you can now recreate the Win98 system on the new PC
- you also need a Win98 CD-ROM when you first start Win98 on your new PC, to fix hardware issues - this is very important.
- when Win98 is OK, you can use it the normal way - boot into Win98 and work with it as you do on the old PC - or you can use it as "guest" in WinXP.
- you also need a tiny boot manager, to select the OS you wish to boot.
It's nice to have 2 different Operating Systems on your machine.
regards,
Stefan
