I just recd a bunch of e-mails stating that I was over the bandwith limit for a 24hour period.... Apparently some other website put a link to a .mp3 file of a 1/2 hour long DJ set I had created that I had on my site and it was downloaded over 400 times...

I took the file down, but am worry that powweb is going to suspend my account... since that's what the e-mails said...

any advice on this???

any advice on this???Send an e-mail to support explaining the situation and that you have removed the file that caused the problem. If your site has been disabled, then ask for it to be re-instatated. I'd be cautious, was the MP3 file your copyright? - ie the music itself not the creation/compilation - as you may also be breaking other Terms of Service.

If you go over your site will be disabled. This is an automatic server process and not a powweb staff intervention. The emails you recieved were also an automatic process so that you could an did take messures to prevent yourself from going over. Since you have taken down the offending file, then you "should" be ok, depending on how close to the 5mb you were when you took it down.

Now if you do end up going over and your account turned off then you can either email support@powweb.com or go to http://chat.powweb.com and talk to one of the admins to turn you back on.

You could break the file up into several smaller files. What freq. rate did you create the mp3 with? Recording at a lower freq will equal a smaller file size, at the expense of sound quality, however. Think of freq rate as similar to tape speed, a higher freq rate/tape speed sounds better, but equals more tape/file size.

You can require visitors to login to download the file and put a limit on the amount of downloads per hour, day and/or month. Check your webstats to see who was linking to your mp3 and send a request to remove the links.

You may also want to use robots.txt to disallow robots from listing mp3s, jpgs and other files on your website. If already indexed, you would have to request removal directly to Google or other search engines.

I do not recommend Bandwidth Bob or other anti-leeching methods to protect files, since this works for some people but not others. I personally tried a few scripts like this and was unable to view my own images through the router firewall! Proxy servers will also be blocked.

If the mp3 is not copyrighted by you, then you should not make it available on your website without written permission that can be sent to PowWeb upon request.

If that site is legit, and there is an honest to goodness demand for your music there, maybe you could provide that site with a copy of the file(s) so that they can be downloaded from there.

Now that I know people in portgugal want to hear your music, I feel like I need to go find it and download it! :-)

actually I was just guessing Portgugal since the site has a .pl @ the end....
But I'm probably wrong about that...

Here's two blocks of text I use in the chat room all the time :D

.htaccess is file that allows you to cusomize the look and feel of your site's more technical aspects. Custom error pages, password protection, url redirects, and more can be done through a .htaccess file. For a more comprehensive look on .htaccess, please visit: http://www.javascriptkit.com/howto/htaccess.shtml

If you have problems with specific sites pulling your files, using your bandwidth... you can block them individually OR prevent any linking at all with htaccess. Information about this can be found at: http://www.javascriptkit.com/howto/htaccess10.shtml
