email client recommendations

I just dropped incredimail and have temporarily moved back to outlook express, but would like to move to a non-microsoft mail client. What I am looking for is one that it is easy to back up and restore messages & contacts which I find that OE is not able to easily do.

Which clients would you recommend and why? Does anyone know of a web site that objectively compares the various ones available?

You might want to take a look at Mozilla Thunderbird (http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/), I've been happy with it since I switched.
