I agree, Google is the only major free listing search engine that really matters at this point.

It is also a good idea to get listed in dmoz directory. Literally hundreds of sites drag from dmoz database, so if you are listed with dmoz you are listed with hundreds of others.

I agree Google is great but Alta Vista is good (and still free), too.

As web designer who has to submit the sites I hate dmoz and its categories. On the other hand I cannot ignor it because it has such an impact on other search engines.

I am especially upset about one point of their submission agreement:

Quote: "To grant Netscape Communications Corporation a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use, publish, copy, edit, modify, or create derivative works from my submission." End of quote.

How can they get away with something like that?

Read further on down that page and you'll see this:

"i.e. "submission" means the title and descriptive information you supply for your site, not the actual website or its contents"

They're talking about the content you submit to them, not your site. They legally cannot "leech" anything from your site and use it.

Hope this makes sense.

Well, I just heard of Dmoz for the first time just now. The nice thing is, I went over to submit, and somehow I'm already there!!!

yeah....I was never a biog directories fan. Good old Alta then moved onto Google. I got listed in the Google Dir and all that, and somehow I'm now part of directories I never even knew existed (some US army directory as well).

DMOZ is a human edited directory. No robot. Sometimes the editors will find a site they enjoy or feel is exceptional and add it on there on.

Who knows how you were added? The main thing is your in!

After reading on several other boards and doing some testing myself, it appears that Google may start to dance soon. Check all three www1. - www2 - www3.google.com for keywords on your site and if you get different results, you know something is on the move.
