View Full Version : Don't know where to start!!!!
I'm new to the whole process. I just signed up for powweb and I want to start building my site. I don't have a clue where to begin the process. Can somebody please tell me, what should I be doing first? I feel so lost right now!! Please guide my steps in the right direction.......
Before anyone can offer help, they will need to understand just what your level of HTML, FTP, Etc knowledge is.
In other words, let us know just what it is that you need help with :)
Also what type of website are you aiming for. Will it just be a personal site, a gaming site, etc.
A good source of free tutorials on all things web-related:

You've bought and paid for a package with Powweb - welcome to the club. You will have obtained a free domain name as part of the package. That takes time to circulate round the internet in a process called Propagation. This takes 2-4 days before everyone world-wide can see your site - or at least the Welcome Page that Powweb provided.
Next step, as outlined in the other posts above, indicate exactly where you lie in respect of being new - what is it you hope to do with your site, how knowledgeable are you on things like HTML etc. Do you even know what PHP, CGI, .htaccess and .htpassword are? Do you know about CMS's, osCommerce etc? You need to give us some help on here so you can be helped.
I want to start a website for an up and coming record label. I am basically at a kindergarden level as far as HTML's, etc.. I purchased a domain before signing up and had it transferred over.
You have to learn HTML

You have to learn HTML
Try this http://www.pagetutor.com/pagetutor/makapage/As an early step in the process of learning HTML it is sometime useful to use a package that does things for you such as Dreamweaver or Frontpage. Whilst not easy to learn the complex parts, these packages are very easy to use to put together a small and simple website.
Start simple, create a few pages and link them together. Create the pages on a simple topic - nothing to do with the main purpose of the webspace. Once you are comfortable with doing the simple things like changing size, colour, background and including images and sound files then you're ready to at least plan your new website.
Depending on how good you are at the basics by this time you can then spend time experimenting with adding discussion forums etc to your new site. Look at other sites and decide what you like and don't like about them and what you wish to include and go for it!

This program is free: http://www.virtualmechanics.com/products/dwarf/ It's limited to making one page but it will get you started. You may have FrontPage on your pc already, it can make many pages. Others like Dreamweaver and NetObjects Fusion are well worth the money.

Also get FileZilla: http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/ It's a free FTP program that will help you see what's going on at the server.
