my friend has been trying to install msn messenger 6.02 on her computer, but after the download is complete and she opens the setup .exe file, it gives her an error saying there may be a corrupted cabinet file. she has tried uninstalling and such but to no avail. installing old versions of messenger hasn't worked either.

she uses windows xp.

help!!

help!!Where did she download from? The latest official version is 6.2 (not 6.02) from this site http://messenger.msn.com/ which at least claims to be the official site.

I did a yahoo search for msn messenger and got a lot of hits on url's that were official looking but on closer inspection weren't. Only download from the official site!

I am win xp and it was not necessary to uninstall the old version before installing 6.1 (at that time) .. now it updated automatically to 6.2

In fact I still have the old version on the PC.

help!!Get your friend to download again. CAB filles are the files used by Microsoft (and others) to store compressed versions of install software. If this doens't work, try downloading version 5.0 (same link as before but tell the browser that you're using WinNT 4.0). Install, and then re-install 6.2. A possible reason for not being able to install afte de-installing is that some files may not have be deleted whilst others are for the later version (some may have been installed). One final desperate measure I've used is to rename the Messenger directory (usually in Program Files) and install from a fresh download.

I got her to start>search for "MSN" and delete everything that came up (there were a few files such MSNSETUP, MSNERROR, MSN, and such.. I forget what folder they were in, but no MSN messenger folder existed in program files).

after doing that, she re-downloaded the msn 6.2 setup, ran it, and it worked fine.

yay :)
