I'm need a search function/application to search html files for keywords determined by the user. All the html files are in the same directory.

Try hotscripts.com. That's an extremely simple process.

I just installed FDSE (http://www.xav.com/scripts/search/) and like it a lot. Very straightforward, yet flexible.
