hey there powweb,

i have a domain name with the hosting package, as standard, and that works fine. but then i bought another domain with another company, and changed the nameservers to the powweb ones [primary and secondary]. but that domain doesnt work, i left it for almost a week and it still doesnt work. are there any changes i need to make in order to make this domain work?

thanks in advance :o

What is the domain name?

Did you go into OPS and add the new doing to your package (i.e. add a 'pointer domain')? They charge $20 per domain for this.

will that fix it? and it means i can have www.newdomain.com/folder ?
if so, i'd pay the $20 no hesitations.

Domain pointing includes Powweb setting up the domain in their DNS and pointing the domain to your package.

By default, the pointed domain will point to the same site as your original domain. You can use your .htaccess file to redirect the new domain to a different directory and it will appear as a totally separate site. Powweb won't provide support on setting up the .htaccess file for this, but there are instructions in the FAQs and other customers on this forum are very will to help if you have problems.

Yes, that is what you need to use your second domain name with your hosting package.

That is a one time fee! NOT a yearly cost.

It's hard to diagnose without more information. If you could post the domain names and the redirection-related contents of your .htaccess file, we'd be better able to help you.

where's the .htaccess file?

If you already have one, it would be in the htdocs folder. If there isn't one there, you'll want to create one. The file is a simple text file that you just cut/paste the code from the tutorials into. Easiest way to create one is to open up Notepad, select File --> Save As, and then enter the following into the filename textbar, including the quotes:

".htaccess"

The quotes will ensure that it saves it exactly as you enter and does not append a .txt to the end.

Then you'll want to take the code at the following link under "Pointing Additional Domain to Package" and paste it into the file, modify it for your domains and the directories you create for them, and then upload it to your htdocs folder.

Tutorial: http://help.powweb.com/tutorials/htaccess/subdomain.php

Note that if you are already getting a 500 error before you modify or create a .htaccess file, something else is wrong. The htdocs folder might be missing (in which case you need to recreate it at the root) or a host of other things might be wrong. Again, hard to diagnose without the domain names so we can peek.

Hope this helps.

Before you play with htaccess, make sure BOTH domain names resolve to the default page in htdocs. Then you know both domain names are working. Then, take a look here:

and here:

htdocs folder exists, i created a .htaccess file containing the code in the tutorials, now still getting 500 error. domains are www.beserk.us and pointing to it is www.dasm.co.uk

thanks!

Step 1 -

Remove the htaccess file. Do both domain names point to your htdocs default load page? If no - STOP - domain pointing is not working for the domain.

If yes, go to step 2 -

Step 2 -

Post your htaccess file so we can see what you have.

domain pointing is not working for the domain.
The dasm.co.uk domain was recently registered, and then the domain whois info updated.

It correctly points to powweb - but the update was today (17th Oct) so I'd expect you need to wait the 2 - 5 days for the .co.uk to resolve world-wide.

Keep trying - it could take a while.

Oh, take out the .htaccess file until it does resolve to the root, that way you know the problem isn't anything you've done :)

The problem is that when you added the dasm.co.uk domain as a pointer in OPS, you included the 'www' - which you weren't supposed to do. I've corrected this so just give it a max of four hours to reset in our DNS servers and you'll be set.
