View Full Version : www. vs. no www. appearance
This may sound terribly ignorant to many of you, but it's stumped me and I don't know how to "fix" it.
Just today, I noticed that a file, when one types in the www. before our domain name, appears one way. Without the www. and just using the domain name, it appears as it should.
What I'm saying is that I've uploaded a file to the htdocs folder, and if I go to mydomain.org it shows the revised file. However, if I go to www.mydomain.org, it shows the file as it was before I revised it.
Where is this coming from (being pointed to) and how do I change it so it appears the same for both www.mydomain.org and mydomain.org? I can't find the file so don't know how it's pointing to it. In my htdocs folder, there is ONLY the correct, revised file.
Am I just losing my mind? I've cleared my cache, and history, closed the browser, even rebooted. Thought I was really losing it until I noticed what was happening with the "www." stuff.
Thanks for any insight!
Josie
Well, seeing how www.yoursite.com is simply a CNAME for yoursite.com, there shouldn't be any difference. Mind posting the address so that we can see if there is any difference, with and without the www?
Sure, I don't mind posting the URL(s)
This one shows a list of Board of Directors:
http://www.thewindsofchange.org/mailing.html
This one shows the proper file, *without* the now defunct Board of Directors:
http://thewindsofchange.org/mailing.html
You'll have to scroll down quite a way to find what I'm speaking of, but it definitely makes a difference, since we no longer have a Board of Directors and it's misleading to leave that there.
I just can't figure out where that file is and how to overwrite or delete it.
Thanks for your help!
Josie
You stated that you've cleared your cache. Have you tried opening up the www in Internet Explorer and clicking Control + F5. I just visited it with both www and without it and didn't see any differences.
Could you point out exactly what the difference is?
I did as you suggested, and it's still there. If you scroll down, till you see this in RED, it's the list of Directors that make the difference, they are removed, as they should be, on the file without the www. :

It should only have "Thank you,

I'm seeing that on both (the correct info), so I don't know what the problem is.

They both come up the same for me too.
Both ways has just this below the RED text.
"Thank you,
The Winds of Change,
Josie S. Hurt, Founder"
well, then, why is it that I see it one way with the www. and another way without? How do I clear this from MY browser so that I see it like you are? I've done absolutely ALL I know to do to clear history, cache, opened new browser, refresh and a reboot, so what is it about MY machine that I'm seeing it differently?
:(
I appreciate your help, though, at least it reassures me that others are not seeing the wrong information, but it still puzzles me that I can, and I don't know what to do about it.
Josie
Try this:
Under IE, Choose Tools, Internet Options. On the general tab, you'll see a Temporary Internet files section. Click Delete Files... and than check Delete all offline content and click ok.
When that's done, clear the history.
Now, close all browser windows and open a new one entering your site address (with the www) and see if that helps any.
I have had my webhosting setup since 05/09 and sometimes, not all the time, I get the blank powweb page when I go to http://www.pauken.us/
I usually have to go to just http://pauken.us/ which will then redirect to my other site because pauken.us isn't ready. Sometimes it will redirect, other times not.
CNAME was already setup with the www. setup. This is where the issue lies I feel. But it could also be due to worldwide DNS caching because from tracert.com and pinging my site from various locations around the world, the results show mixed results from powwebsecure to my actual IP address listed in OPS HTTP section.
Any responses?
Also, I read several times about people having an 'etc.' folder. I don't have such a folder. Should I email tech support?
