I can't get to FTP on magnatar or callisto.
The announcements section says they are having router problems. I got an error earlier that my domain name could not be resolved, so perhaps this included the name servers. Whatever, it seems to be ok now, at least on callisto - I can FTP and see my web site.

Yes, indeed - I have three web sites hosted on callisto as well. They have all been down more than I would like over the last several weeks. I doubt they've gone over
the 3% down-time limit, but it still seems excessive. I hope all the "legacy" units can be upgraded soon.
In a way, I'm surprised the folks at powweb have let us know that we are all running on old, hand-cranked, model-T, 286-whatever hardware by calling them "legacy."
But I still can't complain. In dollars-per-hour-uptime powweb does just fine.
Check back later and read a good book in the meantime. I'm guessing that they'll
change the "legacy" servers to "super-whammy-dyne" servers real soon now.

The legacy servers are by no means obsolete or "286-whatever" hardware as you put it. Those machines are simply the original architecture we originally had in place where ftp, http, and previoulsy mysql were all on the same physical server. Now, all services are on seperate machines within our new architecture. MySQL was recently moved off the legacy servers and I believe an FTP migration is being planned as well.
The legacy servers themselves are quite competent performers. And there is no "3% downtime limit". Here's what my monitoring shows as callisto HTTP availability over the past six months:
June: 100%
July: 100%
August: 100%
September: 99.20%
October: 98,48%
November: 98.13%

Yes, I know the "legacy" servers aren't antiques. I'm quite happy with Powweb's excellent service at a great price over the last three years.
Mostly, I was commenting on the unfortunate use of the word "legacy" which does imply "old." Perhaps I could suggest "universal" both in the astronomical meaning (I love the names of the legacy servers) and in the "does-it-all" sense - as opposed to distrubuted processing.
As for the 3% - at one time I thought Powweb guaranteed 97% up time. I see now that they promise 99.9% up time on the sign up FAQ page. (So the last three months aren't quite up to snuff for callisto.)
No, they don't actually promise anything as far as uptime goes, and even so, the uptime is for their entire network across all services. As long as anything on any server is working, that's considered uptime. (They used to say 99.7% - not 97%, which would be pretty awful.)
If you want a host that actually guarantees uptime of your site, you'll have to look elsewhere and pay MUCH more.
PowWeb's services have become much more reliable over the 2.5 years I've been here. They've invested a lot in redundancy and it shows. Yeah, the legacy servers are, rather recently, becoming more troublesome. That should fade into memory in the not too distant future.
