You must have Java installed! Did you check to make sure you do?
Or install an IRC client such as Mirc.

You can go to java.com to download the java applet.
http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
Even with a current Java installed, the web chat does not always work, I have found.
Java: Write Once, Debug Everywhere

I tried the java-based chat way back and it was rather limiting; something like mIRC works way better IMO, but the java version is maybe OK for simple online stuff.

of course, I'll swear by mIRC; but, I'll also say that... has anybody tried getting in with firefox? Even after reinstalling java a few times, I can still never get it to load correctly. So if I sneak in, I have to do it in IE... and I HATE IE - Firefox on the craptop and Konqueror at work!
Anybody know how to do this?

Have you updated your Firefox to the newest version (1.0)? I know they had an update a few months back with version (1.0).
mino: If you do not already have Firefox, you can go here to download it: http://www.mozilla.org/. Once you download the browser, you would then type in http://chat.powweb.com to log into the Powweb chat room.
The web chat applet crashes Firefox 1.0 for me. It never loads, and when I try to close the page, boom! If I recall, there is a simple IRC client available as an extension for Firefox.
I had not tried the online (browser) chat for some time, just checked and it's loading fine for me. I'm running FireFox 1.0 with JRE 1.4.

yes -- it is very good, but no need for swearing ;)

How do you setup MIRC to connect to powweb's chat??
I just tried Firefox 1.0 with Java 1.4 on another system - same problem. The applet starts to download and then stalls. Firefox then goes comatose.
For MIRC, just specify chat.powweb.com as the server and connect to #general.

server: chat.powweb.com
room: #general (mIRC you can do /j general)
Had I gotten the latest of everything? Yes. I can't get it on my laptop nor my XP box at work. Guess I'll do some tinkering. But then again, do I really need Java chat? Most other java things I do are working so it is worth risking taking another one of the nine lives from this putty-tat that calls itself a computer

As a note...
as per: http://forum.powweb.com/showthread.php?t=43006
I loaded: http://members.cox.net/classicweb/Heroes/heroes.htm
On that page is also a link to: http://members.cox.net/classicweb/Heroes/info.htm
which ran another java thing that doesn't work right BUT, there is a prompt that it's broken and a download is available. I installed it and now the room works.
