View Full Version : Visitor can't ping my site with DHCP enabled
One of the visitors of my site, http://kakaostats.net, can't ping it when he enables the DHCP service is his router. As soon as he disable it he can. It only happens with my site. All the others work Ok. He tried 3 other powweb hosted sites without problems.
I'm a month now with Powweb and didn't hear anyone else with a similar problem.
This has to be something in your visitor's local setup - I am using DHCP and can ping your site just fine. I don't think it's anything you need to worry about if he can reach the site normally.
Ask him if he can ping www11.powweb.com
I also have DHCP enabled in my router and have no problems but he can only reach the site normally (not only ping but get the pages) if he disables it. But he needs DHCP for his house lan.
Why www11? I'm on 16.
I will ask him to ping both.
Both www11/16.powweb.com pages come up ok for him. This is very strange. It only happens with my domain. As long as I know only this user experience this problem.
www11 through www18 are all part of the same load-balanced server farm. I knew you were on one of those but not which one.
My guess is that he has bogus DNS info for your domain in his DHCP server's DNS cache. Perhaps restarting it will help.
Ask him to do an nslookup of your domain with DHCP enabled and see what it says.

If he has not already, be sure to flush his local cache too if possible. If he cannot ping or tracert your site, then likely DNS server database related.
When DHCP is causing problems with DNS mapping (as it seems for your friend), one can enter the IP, mask, gateway, and DNS values manually as a check and test. If he does, then have him pick or add a public DNS server that is different and see if that works as a test.
** there may be some Powweb load-balancing issues here if he is seeing the old site's IP instead of new PW-LB stuff, so forcing a different DNS can test to see if DNS server related **

I will ask him to ping both.DHCP isn't essential for a small home based LAN. He could manually set the IP addresses of his computers, routers and printers and any other devices with IP addresses.

What is easier? To change your setup or to go to the other site which is one click far?
