I am considering using Powweb, but first need to get a few more facts.

I am wondering:

Is it possible to set up coupon codes? Such as:

X dollars off

X percent off when you spend over x amount

Free shipping over x amount


Also - does anyone know if powweb has the ability to set up contests on your website?

Yes you can do all of that, just not sure on the contests part. Some of those options are installed with the default osCommerce and some are done with contributions that are easy to install.

Just a comment that none of this has anything to do with PowWeb specifically. PowWeb is a hosting service - you are asking for particular features in an osCommerce store. You are in complete control of what your store looks like and what the code does.

osCommerce is very much a "hands on" e-store system. It can do a lot, but adding features requires editing PHP code.

Yes, I understand it is all osCommerce.. but when I went to their site to get these answers, I found it very user UNfriendly.

My other issue is that I want to use the templates set-up, my knowledge of html is VERY limited. So, I need a host with programs that are going to be easy for me to use and not requiring me to learn html.

You may want to consider Zen Cart (www.zen-cart.com), which is supposedly easier to set up and modify. But seriously, you're not going to get very far if you're unwilling to learn even a bit of HTML. Either that, or your store will be plain and generic, or worse, look amateurish as most prepackaged template-driven sites do.

Hmm. Personally and professionally, which e-commerces (osCommerce or Zen Cart) would you recommend for a web developer who has a very limited of PHP programming but knows HTML very well.... ???

I have not used Zen Cart at all myself - all I know about it is what I see on their web site and what some here have said. Zen Cart is template-driven by default, so changing the look is rather easy (supposedly, and with limits). You can do this with osC too, but have to install a template addon.

You don't need to know much PHP to deal with osC - just some of the basics will do.

BTW, my advice is, in some sense, personal. I don't do web work as a profession. (I have a good "day job".) But my profession is software engineering, so I do have that slant on things. I bought a book on PHP ("Programming PHP" from O'Reilly Press) and it helped me a lot, even though I already knew a dozen programming languages.

I think I would suggest starting with Zen Cart (it's free) and see if it meets your needs. If it doesn't, you can explore osCommerce. I've made lots of tweaks to "my" store, but some of those may not be needed with Zen Cart.
