Dreamweaver is just lovely. I have been using it for a year and I will not change.

It is professional. Version 4 is even much better.

Should you require help feel free to; pm, email or post here.

Good Choice

For the past 7 years I've been programming HTML with text editors. Everything by hand.

I've tested just about every HTML editor out there and couldn't find one that I liked.

Recently I was introduced to Dreamweaver 4 and instantly fell in love with it.

What with the ability to create templates and libraries, it's a coder's dream come true.

I won't go back. I'm converting my website to Dreamweaver and it's so much easier to manage.

Now I need to evaluate Dreamweaver MX.

Cheers.

I don't use Dreamweaver, but I believe you can publish through the built in FTP client.

I don't use Dreamweaver, but asked a friend that does and he said that YES you can publish from Dreamweaver. In Dreamweaver I guess it's called "Manage Your Sites" instead of publish.

Geez, $400 for Dreamweaver MX. Of course, I'd be able to get it at the student price of $200. I so love being a college student :)

Hold on. For the $200 student price, I don't get Dreamweaver MX, but Macromedia Studio MX, which includes six products:

Dreamweaver MX, Macromedia Flash MX, ColdFushion MX (Developer Edition), Fireworks MX, Freehand.

By the way neville, that's a link for Dreamweaver MX.

Anyone who knows where to find good templates to use in dreamweaver? (yea, I'm lazy, nothing to do about that ;)

They're all over the web. Just do a search for the string "dreamweaver templates".

Forget about free ones. They don't exist. I looked.

Not true.... "Forget about free ones. They don't exist. I looked."....I'm not doubting that you looked :), there are even some on the DW site. I will say that many of the free ones you will find lack quality. If you get stuck in your search let me know, I will search through my book marks and post some links. Try these for now.

As far as I know any template should work. When you open it in DW you will know right away. I've opened many different templates in DW4 and have never had a problem.

I'll say. None of the free ones are worth anything. Let's just say that a template with the Stars and Stripes just wouldn't cut it for me

Anyway, seeing as how DW template files are just text anyway, I manually create templates from old web pages instead of starting all over.

I just grab one of my old web page files in a text editor, edit out the parts I don't want, add any appropriate DW tags, save it with a DWT extension and VOILA - a new template for an old site.

Of course most won't be able to do that but it works for me.

Saves me a WHOLE lot o' time regenerating pages with the correct layout.

The problem I have is that I don't have that many old sited (at least not good looking ;), so I'm looking for new template/site, but as U said, most of the good ones are not free...

well the web is full of resources...if you are short of ides...then start browsing until you find something you like, save it and then use it as a template....as long as you remove all the text there is nothing wrong!

Dreamweaver has a built in FTP Utility, It's a little slow depending on your connection, I use WS-FTP and it's faster than dreamweavers FTP.

Go to macromedia.com and download the trial version, you won't reget it.

thx for the tip!

I've downloaded it but haven't had time to check it out yet, hopefully this weekend I'll squeeze it in! :D

I use DW to ftp but if you need to set permissions I found that the extension offered did not work for me. I would look at that if you find you are having problems after uploading a board etc.
I now use CuteFTP for setting permissions.

been using DW 3 for years..... Finally loaded DW 4..... you can buy Standalone DW4 .... for about $250.00 if you shop around.... that means $125.00 for you mannic..... or any other students....

Yes to FTP.... never had an issue.....

no you can't set permissions on files in the CGI bin.... with the DW.... but I hear someone has an extension for it.....

I rather like using FTP for that anyway.....

Just set the DW remote folder to /htdocs....
when you're done editing a page..... hit the "PUT" button... and it throws it all up at one shot.... pretty slick.....

I started coding with Notepad.... years ago..... tried FP.... and multiple others..... DW.... is great.... DW4 .... has the ability to view wyswig & code at the same time now..... but since i stay mostly in code view..... it's neat.....

lots of templates..... extensions..... flash buttons.... and with fireworks..... it's an unbeatable combination....

well worth the money

I just have to add a couple more things to the discussion: I looove Dreamweaver. (And I'm not getting paid by Macromedia)

Here some important points:

- There is an excellent support forum for newbies
- Also Google has an archive of the forum so it's very easy to search old posts. Usually helps me within minutes
- Free extensions to the program can be downloaded, most are free. I wouldn't know what to do without them.
- Dreamweaver has a feature called " Clean up Front Page Code" what a blessing!!
- The ability to make global changes is a real timesaver. Let's say you change your mind and you want to rename a certain link, Dreamweaver updates all instances of it. Just remeber to set up your site properly before you get started.
- If you own Fireworks and Dreamweaver, you really start to get productive. Although I own Photoshop, I do most of my web images in Fireworks. You can even make corrections to images right out of Dreamweaver (well, it opens Fireworks lets you make the correction but when you close the window the image is automatically updated in Dreamweaver).
Project Seven www.projectseven.com has some really nice free extensions and a support forum. They do magic with layers! They also sell templates which are really nice.

One more word to the ftp feature in Dreamweaver before I get carried away: Yes, you can upload out of Dreamweaver but I personally don't use it. I like to have complete control over what gets uploaded and don't like the automated features.

You mentioned that you can't set permissions with the Dreamweaver extension; funny, I use it all the time with Dreamweaver and my FTP server. Perhaps it depends on what server your site is hosted, because that appears to be the limitation. If anyone else is hosted on andromeda.powweb.com and is using this extension, let us know. And if you're hosted on another server, post as well. Maybe that's where the issue is.

I have attached the windows version "Set Permissions" Dreamweaver extension in a zip file. Remember two things:

[list=1]
You must have Macromedia Exchange loaded on your local client
You must use Dreamweaver 3 or higher

Cheers!

You mean extension manager, right?

Exchange is the collaborative section of Macromedia's website.

Thanks.

Correction to my earlier post.

You have to have the Macromedia Extension Manager on your local client not the Macromedia Exchange...
