Hi,
and I have two sites at POWWEB, these being
www.ronebergcairns.com
and
www.ronebergcairnscontinued.com
These are "Family Photo Albumns - Family History" web sites
At the moment they contain around 20000 images

My son was sent a photo, and the extension is ".psd"
I have tried everything I know to open this file/image, but am having no luck

I went to this page
http://whatis.techtarget.com/fileFormatP/0,289957,sid9,00.html
and found out that the extension is
PSD = Bitmap (Adobe Photoshop)

I haven't got this program installed, and after checking around it seems a bit (very!!!) expensive to pay hundreds of dollars for a program to open one image!!!

Would anyone be able to open it for me, and send it back in "jpg" format???

I have the file sitting in My Documents at the moment, and it is huge - 4495kb!!! - is that normal for this type of image format???

Thanks
Geoff

Geoff, if you toss it up online somewhere and PM me the URL to it, I'd be happy to convert it to a jpg for you :)

Hi "jj"
and a million thanks for the offer

I am not sure about putting it on the internet - because I can't open it!!!

As I mentioned, I have thousands of photos on our sites, but it is all "very simple-stupid" - just links to photos

So do you mind if I email and attach the 4.5Mb file to you???

Hope this is okay

you shouldnt have trouble putting it on your server and sending him (or I) the link and we can open it and put on our server or e-mail it back to you. Just upload it like it were any other image or file and we can download it fine.

For future reference, Irfanview (http://www.irfanview.com) (free) can open .psd files and, although I've never tried it, you should be able to save as .jpg or other filetype.

Good luck,
Kevin

Hi "Builder"
Took your advice and downloaded Irfanview
Yes, it can open "psd" and yes, it saves them as "jpg"
Shouldn't have any more hassles!!!

and hi "RickE"
Good point,
but the pic was sent to him by a couple of "young lady friends"!!!
Was of themselves - and naturally, he wanted to open it asap!!!

Just a question
Is it normal for these files to be so big???
It was 4.5Mb, but by the time I had it converted and resized, it was only 30Kb - and that's a big difference!!!
Or is it that the girls may just not know enough about the Adobe Photoshop program, etc

Thanks again to all who helped out

Geoff

4.5Mb is typical of a PSD file. Saving in PSD format retains layers making it easy to see and make alterations on an image. If the girls have Photoshop they can save as a single small filesize JPG: File> Save for web..> Save at %50 and that will save the file/image as a 30k or so .jpg much better for emailing.
