Okay this seems really weird to me. For some reson, on random sites, when I go the links page and the site is using banners for the links (like a banner link exchange) I cannot see the banners nor are the links active. I have been to a BUNCH of sites and it's the same. Some sites I can see the banners and some I can't. ABout 50/50. I have even called a couple of friends and they can see the links. Two examples:

http://www.cathynordyke.com/links.htm - can see the links

http://sandradelvecchio.com/links.htm - cannot see the links

Text links, no problem. Banner links, can't see them.

Windows XP. I have tried using both IE and netscape. This just started with-in the last couple of days.

Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Try and use Firefox and see if that helps - http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Could it be a coding error?

But I can see the pictures and all are clickable links with IE except for http://sandradelvecchio.com/links.htm - Laura Mak advert

But I can see the pictures and all are clickable links with IE except for http://sandradelvecchio.com/links.htm - Laura Mak advertSorry, I wasn't specific enough in an earlier post. The first address provided worked fine, it's the second one that shows no links on the page, the same as you get.

As regards to the second link, there is only one link that I cannot see which is the Laura Mak advert. I can see the other links without problems.

I see no links in either Firefox or IE and viewing the source shows nothing inside the <a> tags. How is this page produced?

This is really strange! What versions of IE do you have?

I have IE 6.0 (current with all updates) and Firefox 1.0. I verified that no "ad blocking" was going on.

Is this just a straight HTML page or is it produced by a script? I also tried it through anonymizer.com and saw no links.

The Laura Mak link has no <a href></a>, so obviously it won't work in any browser. In my FireFox all the other links are not only looking good but do work as well. Just a HTML-mistake, I guess.

Hey guys thanks for the thoughts. Both sites were built with Frontpage and up until the last day or so, those links and the advert on the front page on Sandra's site were visible and worked fine.

Another site that I cannot see the banner links is http://.marcyporter.com.

I did not build that site and it is in html.

Now this is interesting - I'm on a different PC and I can see the link banners on both sites. You're sure the pages are just straight HTML?

Someone mentioned spyware earlier I think. Is it possible that spyware views those links as adware or spyware or something?

But then of course, why would some show and some would not?

Same for me. I can see all those link for marcyporter. I have IE 6.0.2900.2180 and have no toolbars installed (apart from the default IE)

And I just talked to Sandra Delvecchio and she can see the banners on her site fine. So it msut be something on my machine.

With both IE (same version you have) and Netscape 7.2

I use norton virus/firewall and spydoctor. Think one of these could have anything to do with it?

As I said above, I cannot see the Laura Mak Advert LInk and now I realised that even the Sandra D link is missing. I can see Zena, Marcy and truebodies's links and all of them are clickable.

Yes, cleared cache in both IE and Netscape.

stevel

It isn't a cache issue - if you look at the HTML that is served, there is no <img> tag in the missing links. I'd suspect an ad-blocker, but I have the same configuration on my two machines, and it works on one and not on the other. I'm going to poke at this some more...

Ha! With a sharp stick? Thanks much.

Ok, I've sort of figured it out. It is indeed ad-blocking - with Norton Internet Security in my case. It objects to the /banner in the path - if you change that to something else, it may start working for you.

The "sort of" is that even if I tell NIS to allow ads on the page, it still blocks them. It isn't until I disable NIS entirely that they show up. Even disabling ad blocking in general doesn't do it. I don't understand this behavior.

Okay. I also use Norton. And three days ago renewed my virus protection and added the firewall (seeing as how IE firewall is a joke).

I'll play with this and see what I can come up with. Thanks much Steve!

And also thanks to everyone who threw in their ideas as well!

Why does Norton give all these problems and people continue to use it?

stevel

NIS is doing exactly what it is supposed to do - kill ads. And the banner links in the pages in question look like ads. There does seem to be an issue with disabling the feature on a per-page basis, but I am very happy with the Norton products - they work well.

I agree Steve. Everyday I get 4-5 alerts from my Norton Firewall that someone is atacking my system (virus, pop-up ad ****, etc), so I'll live with a little mystery from time to time.

Besides, it exercised the brain to figure out how to get the settings just right! :D
