View Full Version : Error - Too many connections
I have a room scheduling script on my site that uses PHP and MySQL.
During the last 2 days, I've been getting notice from the script that there is a problem connecting to the database:
There has been a MySQL error.
Error: connect - Too many connections
Server time of the error: January 13 09:22am
The timing of these messages conicide with the time my server was combined with another (see this thread (http://forum.powweb.com/showthread.php?t=45321)) . Before the combining of the servers, I NEVER got this message from my script.
MySQL database is on the MySQL07 server and my site is on the Charon/Andromeda server. Could there be something wrong with the connection between the two servers?
From what I've read in other threads, the message stems from too many simultaneous connections to the MySQL server and that it's nothing to do with my site and everything to do with the configuration of the MySQL server.
Is anybody else getting the same 'Too many connections' error?
Or, is this something I'm just going to have to deal with?

The configuration of the MySQL server is not the issue. The server is just overloaded at that point in time. Yes, there is nothing you can do about it except protest to PowWeb if it happens too often. They are in business and play the balancing act of keeping the servers loaded, but not too loaded.
Mine is all screwed up too. I am going to call and complain in a few hours. :(

Might be more effective to call and explain nicely. ;)
Or, open a work order through your Ops panel so you have a ticket number that can be tracked.
The same for me: mysql07, message: couldn't connect to database for last few hours...
Same here. I got some P.O.'d forum members.
I have to make it clear that I am still able to work with my scheduling program even though I am getting those messages. 99.9% of my requests go through and for those that don't, a quick refresh of the browser usually works.
So, if you are having problems in not connecting at all to your database, it may be a different problem and it's definitely time to open a new work order through Ops.
I think that is problem with server. Connection with db via phpmyadmin is very very slow, sometimes i can't do anything - blank page... Scripts can;t connect with that db, but on other [mysql02] working propertly. I was sent ticket to Powweb, but I don;t have any reply for now.
My forums have been getting the too many connections error and can't find database error on a regular basis since the MySQL upgrade. :( They never used to before then.
Tonight they have got worse, we're getting them now every 3 to 5 pages. My database is on mysql07.powweb.com
I have put a ticket in to powweb but no response yet.
Hello,
I've already documented a number of tickets regarding this issue. I personally don't know if these global settings have changed, but I'll keep you posted. Most so far happen to be on mysql07 and above. Please be patient.

Oh, of course. It'll be a happy phone call with lots of smiles and, hopefully, a few changes :).
I'm also on mysql07 and I have the same problem. It started yesterday and every third pageview returns this error. I think there is a user with the very heavy mysql usage on this server who overloads the server, affecting us all :( This explains why other mysql servers work fine. We are just unlucky to share the same mysql server with the resource abuser.
Powweb should trace him down, as it's not fair!!! We all pay the same money, and one user should not make everybody else suffer.
We found an abuser on mysql07 and disabled them, the server is working great now however according to the logs there may be a few more. It is difficult to tell if those users queries were causing problem on their own or simply because of the other abuser using all the resources.
Now working faster, better, and OK :). I hope so that will be ok for a long time...
Thanks for help!

I'm in the same boat. Daytime, I'm getting errors on my forums saying too many connections or just can't connect to DB. Nighttime is whole other story. Everything is fine then. This has gone one for about 3 days now. I'm also on MySQL07

I have been getting this daily since the 10th.
Getting pretty annoying.
****** is hosted on PowWeb's server mysql07.powweb.com run mysqld version 4.1.7-log
Yes, it is not so great. Anyway, I was debating whether to move the major part of my site to the intranet (off powweb) and the problems this week have led me to make the move -- actually just finished it. Somewhat painful, but I think it will be better in the long run. Oh well.

I have had my sites hosted here for several years with no problems, until all the latest "upgrades" (downgrades...?") Database tables were corrupted in the upgrade, complained of slowness on mysql07 ever since the "upgrade" - their answer was to disable ME! That database has been working fast & flawlessly for a year & a half with great speed. Now I can't even get the Powweb phpmyadmin to do a dump of any of my databases with crashing & corrupting the whole dump. I am now looking for another RELIABLE web host in light of this horrible experience. I just can't count on Powweb anymore. For the number of hours I have wasted trying to fix their errors, I could have paid for a good web host. BEWARE! I am advising all the people that I refered to Powweb to do the same.
I'm sorry singletrack, I don't know what kind of site do you have, but there are some users on mysql07 with the heavy traffic sites who were slowing down the database, and powweb disabled those. If you are one of those, I think that was the right decision of powweb. Since they've disabled couple accounts, things got much better for the rest of us. Good for you that you have such a popular site, but others don't have to be affected. I was the first one to complain about such users. :(
If you have a heavy traffic and need to connect to a database a lot, than YES, powweb is not for you, and none of the shared hosting is. You should be on a dedicated server. Cos we pay 8 bucks and user recourses on 8 bucks. While others also pay $8, but use recourses on $100. Is it fair???

My point was that the traffic was never a problem until the so-called upgrades. I have had more traffic in the past by far than now with no problem whatsoever. Everthing has just gone to pot since the changes. The previous server was fine. The first contact I had with them about slowness they said someone else was disabled. I think they are trying to pack too many users on a server & crippling sites that worked fine before.
