I uploaded a video to the FTP and when I click on it, it pops up as a download... asking me for a directory.

As where with Yahoo, it would stream in the browser... What can I do to fix this?

Files have to be embedded to "stream". You'll find a Media Embedding Generator here:
http://cit.ucsf.edu/embedmedia/step2.php?mediatype=WindowsMedia

Input your information and it will create the HTML code that you need to embed Media files into a web page.

Please be careful of your language in the forums, this is a public forum.

Thanks for reply...

Well I was using this code

<embed name="RAOCXplayer" src="URL Goes Here"
type="application/x-mplayer2" width="320" height="302" ShowC."1"
ShowStatusBar="1" AutoSize="true" EnableC."0" DisplaySize="0"
pluginspage="http://www.microsoft.com/Windows/Downloads/Contents/
Products/MediaPlayer/"></embed>

But I'll try using that thing...

What about mp3s?

You can use Zina for audio files, http://pancake.org/zina/ , with the ability to download the file or play it, 'stream' it.

That zina looks complex... How does it work? I tried reading all the directions but I have no idea what half the stuff its talking about.

To stream, the video needs to be one of the streaming formats such as QuickTime, RealMedia or Windows media. You can convert your video or audio files to one of the streaming formats. There are free or almost free encoders provided for this purpose.

The free Windows Media Encoder can be found at
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/create.aspx

The free Real Producer for encoding RealMedia is at
http://www.realnetworks.com/products/producer/index.html

and the Pro Version of the QuickTime player, which will encode streaming QuickTime files is at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/products/qt/

Performance:

Many people encode a broadband version at around 250 kbps and also a dialup version at 28 kbps. Obviously, the broadband version will have better quality and frame rates.

Here's an article about how to make mp3 files stream.

And here's an article about streaming Flash files.

I tried converting the file to wma and visited that medial HTML generator... Nothing works.

Unless I'm not putting the right information into that HTML generator.

Something I noticed, was that my wmv files streamed fine when I was using Internet Explorer (NOTE: my wmv files are not embedded in my html, there are links on the page directly to them, if that makes any difference: www.emuvideo.com). Media Player would open up, buffer them, then start playing before the download was complete. Now I use Mozilla Fire Fox web browser and it wants to download the whole file before launching Media Player. It could be something to do with my settings in Mozilla, yet to explore more.

Also, on a side note. I generally prefer not to embed video in a page as you are not giving people a choice to view it or not. Especially if they have a slow connection. Though this is a personal preference from my dial up days....

Cheers,

Damien

I have a short video (about 5 minutes) that I want to put on my web site and allow other to view. I guess they call this streaming.

How would I upload the video and then convert it to allow streaming?

I went to the Microsoft web site that Rick recommended but go even more confused.

Can anyone recommend exactly what package I would need?

Thanks in advance

The free Windows Media Encoder can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/create.aspx

Download and install the encoder, run the encoder and convert your vidio to the Windows Media format.

For dialup users create a file for 28kbps and 160x120 or so size. For broadband users create a version at 250kbps, 320x240 size.

The upload the wmv file(s) and link to them to play.

Walbar, did you create/edit this video yourself? If so, there is a good chance the Software package you used to create this will allow you to save your file into a wmv format.

Windows Movie Maker allows you to save your files in wmv format.
Open Movie Maker,
File -> Import (choose your file)
Drag the Clip into your timeline at the bottom left.
File -> Save Movie (option box appears).
Setting "Other..."
Profile "Video for Broadband NTSC (256kpbs)" <or what ever you want to choose, I never bother with the dial up friendly version. Quality so poor your audience looses the meaning of the video>
Title "whatever.."
Click "OK".
Then when the next box appears, put in the name/directory of the file.

Cheers,

Damien
