I checked thru the posts, but didn't see a post regarding this completely. What are the extensions for videos that we can upload onto the powweb servers?? Also, what is the largest file we can safely upload onto the servers?

Thank you!
Cynthia

CynthiaFile extensions aren't limited as far as I am aware - we can host whatever extension file we like. File size is more of an uploading/downloading timing problem rather than a set limit. Some people have problems at quite a small size, others don't and most problems stem from timing or ISP's.

You cannot have exe files on the PowWeb server. Usually, exe files are executable files to install software, but they are also a format used for Flash when someone does not have the Macromedia Flash software to see fla files or the Flash viewer to see swf files.

Remember that any files that are very large will take a long time to upload or download and use alot of bandwidth. You would have to keep track of that. And of course you know that you cannot post copyrighted material here. ;)

You don't say what you're wanting, but wmv (Windows Media), mov (QuickTime) rm (RealMedia), and swf (Flash) are some of the most common video formats.

As an FYI, I post my personal video files in wmv format (takes too much time to convert to others - sorry Mac users!).

In regards to file size, I can only speak from experience. I've had files sizes of 40 Meg and they are streamed to a Media Player smoothly and without any problem if you have a decent connection (a testament to Powwebs awesome value and download rates!) . Most of my compression runs at 2 Meg per minute, so you can work out how big a file size is based on that. You could split them up into multiple files if they are too large for one shot.

Cheers,

Damien

Shame on you! :D Well, it is difficult to convert a file to a format just for Mac if you don't have one. But some file formats work for both. Unfortunately, those are usually the ones that are not compressed or lose quality. Converting avi to swf for example looks terrible for movies.

Shame on me?

Actually I agree. Supporting one file format is poor, no doubt about it. But, I don't get paid for this, its all in my spare time, so unless you want to convert them for me, reprogram the php on my site to display both file formats and even give yourself a little credit for all the hard work (I'll even let you put a photo up there!), then its going to be a while yet for .mov to be on my web pages ...........

...would 2 photos be better? :-)....

No need to convert. The Windows Media Player for Mac plays Windows media files (no surprise.) http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/mp10/mac.aspx

Now if Mac users refuse to use anything MS, well that's another story. :)

Yeah, I have the link on MY site.

And how about the Linux users? ;)

Yvette, I didn't know if the winkie was for a matter of jest, or... :D

However, here is a thread that I believe sheds some light on getting mplayer running on linux and playing wmv files.
