I am confused about the announcements regarding load balancing the ftp servers. As of now 11:55Am CST 31 Jan 05, what do I type in to log into my ftp site? Do I type ftp://ftp.rpenningtongroup.com or something else? If it is something else, what, as I am located on asteroid?
Thanks for your help

You can use rpenningtongroup.com for your ftp server name using an FTP program such as CuteFTP. Or are you trying to login through the browser?

I am trying to log in through IE 6 as this is what my customers use
You need to use "asteroid.powweb.com" as your FTP hostname. Your domain name will not work. You can setup ftp.rpenningtongroup.com to point to asteroid if you want, but its not necessary.

Use ftp://asteroid.powweb.com - not ftp://ftp.asteroid.powweb.com

ok, my fat fingers. That worked
Now, what do I have to do so that my customers only have to type ftp://rpenningtongroup.com ?

I try using IE to access my site via ftp, and am unable to access the directories.
I enter ftp://ftp01.powweb.com, but am never prompted for username or password...it just tries to login as anonymous, and never shows me anything.

If I type into my browser ftp://powerpageswebdesign.com, I get the message:
An error occurred reading the contents of this folder. Make sure the file name is valid and you have permission to access the location specified.
Details: A connection with the server cannot be established.
If I type into my browser ftp://magnatar.powweb.com, I get the message:
An error occurred reading the contents of this folder. Make sure the file name is valid and you have permission to access the location specified.
Details:
220....and so on plus the No anonymous login allowed message.
Of course, I use CuteFTP, so I don't need to do this through the browser.
I testing in IE6 to get messages above, then tested in Mozilla to get different messages with similar results. No FTP possible this way.

This is what I get also. It's no big thing when I'm in the office, but If the office is closed, and I have to go to an Internet cafe, I don't want to have to download and install an ftp client, then uninstall afterwards. 'Course, MSIE might leave behind passwords & such too.

Yvette, use: ftp://ftpusername@magnatar.powweb.com
I am asked to login - enter the username and password, and I get this error:
An error occurred while opening that folder on the FTP server. Make sure you have permission to access that folder.
Details:
200 TYPE is now ASCII
200 PORT command successful
425 Could not open data connection to port 2702: Connection refused
Tom, you know I am just trying this to see if I can get it to work, even if I don't use it myself!

Yvette, use: ftp://ftpusername@magnatar.powweb.com
This works for me. Thanks! I never had found how to do this until now. :D

Avoid the password prompt. Use
ftp://username:password@magnatar.powweb.com

ftp://username:password@magnatar.powweb.comI would agree with the stipulation that you're in a controlled environment (your own computer). I would not use that in a shared environment where someone else has access to the computer.

I tried ftp://username:password@magnatar.powweb.com and got the same error. I agree that you wouldn't use that with a shared computer and that is one reason why I wouldn't recommend FTP through the browser. Oh, well. I use CuteFTP and that works. ;)

Agreed. I use Core FTP lite here in the office, but on Sundays and holidays, I have to go to an Inet cafe, and sometimes need to ftp.
This works:
* In Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer, go to ftp://magnatar.powweb.com.
* See the error message about no anonymous logins and click OK.
* Select the File menu and choose Login As... enter your username and password.
* Once in, save in your Favorites for faster access next time.
Don't be bothered by the error message. Just click it off and log in :)

Rick, I tried your method and got the error message:
An error occurred while opening that folder on the FTP server. Make sure you have permission to access that folder.
Details:
200 TYPE is now ASCII
200 PORT command successful
425 Could not open data connection to port 3409: Connection refused

Sounds like your firewall is being over-protective. :D

I only have the built-in firewall in my router. And I didn't have to change settings for CuteFTP to compensate for the firewall.

Alpha? Young and cute? Now come on... you know we're trying to get to a "truth in posts" position around here :D
Me thinks you need to change the color of your pills. "Hey Doc. Can we get Alpha some of the blue ones! STAT!" :D

I was going to use SmartFTP, but guys don't respect smart, they like Cute! And I always laugh when the connection says PureFTP. I don't remember what pure is! :D
Microsoft issued a security update to Windows last year which disables the use of usernames and passwords in URLs. You can override this with a registry entry, but I don't advise it.
I just let MSIE remember the login info in its saved passwords through Login As. Or, what I really do, is use SmartFTP which remembers it all.

Little yellow ones... yeah right... you know how sluggish you are on those :D
David Byrnes, for your particular problem, do the cafes have USB ports. I have a thumb drive that I keep email segway and ws_ftp le on just for such occasions. Might give it a shot.

I don't like the idea of using browsers, especially IE. Editing the registry is not a good idea, either.

I use CuteFTP which remembers it all AND is cute! ;)
