View Full Version : More load balancing confusion
Once again, PowWeb should apply some load balancing to those who interface with the public before implementing load balancing on their servers. Two days in a row, not 24 hours, but when I wanted to update my web and I can't because my WS_FTP encounters a connection failure. At the same time, I can access my web via http using my browsers. So I took down my firewall and still get a connect failure error. A long time ago I established a DNS entry with my URL custodian and as means of connecting to PowWeb. Should I now take the DNS down, I don't think so, but your limited documentation on the subject suggests I do. And/or how should my WS_FTP now address PowWeb (and darn if I did not just renew my web).

You should be using jupiter.powweb.com as your FTP hostname - are you?
Thanks Tom for taking the time to update me on what appears to be a substantial change in the way PowWeb expects their "customers/subscribers" to do business. One of the worst system change implementations I've ever seen and I've seen some systems implement on April 1. Now, previously or to my last knowledge my server was Pluto but I'm now as you suggest on Jupiter. Not obviously intutative and my host was my site www name (www.the-ebiz.net). So now I think your suggesting my host is jupiter.powweb.com and I should use my previous userid and password. Using powweb.com as a common host suggest more is at play here than "load balancing", more like main frame processing, which opens all of us to some very serious security problems.
I put this bad boy to bed using jupiter.powweb.com as the host name, used my previous userid and password...you know an email announcement might have been nice on this.
which opens all of us to some very serious security problems.such as?

Come on muijefr what security risk do you see?
I did not get this email either: You can subscribe to the Announcement forums as well.
(my previous server was pluto and not pulsar)
Tom,. I'm going to say thanks for your help then I going to say Powweb runs their systems out of their underwear. Lurking around this forum gets to be a pain in the butt, eventually, and something I do very little of anymore.
Go ahead and delete this mjp.
Using powweb.com as a common host suggest more is at play here than "load balancing", more like main frame processing, which opens all of us to some very serious security problems. As is your custom and apparent hobby, you are pulling "problems" out of thin air where no problems exist. "main frame processing"? Yes, well you caught us on that one. I might as well admit now that our next step is converting our databases to paper punch tape...
RE: I might as well admit now that our next step is converting our databases to paper punch tape...
Nice to see your in your usual not able to see the problem(s) form mjp which strongly suggest to me someday you will well wish your database and subscriber credit card numbers were backup on paper tape, or magnetic tape, or dvd or what ever and forsure not directly accessible by the pros. But then, if there are no problems why backup stuff (go play nice now). :D
And alphadesk what a joy you always are. As I recall you have a "day job" with a power company. Someday take a peak at their computer security group and you'll get an idea of how many main frame security problems do not exist(anyway I hope they have a security group or perhaps it has been out sourced to India). As I recall the flow chart of the security system developed by the telephone company I worked for was 20'x4x8' but then we were involved with hundreds of millions of dollars that were/are at risk(near a billion annually).
I see my reputation has been downgraded to a -5. We'll I've been called worst. :p
