I can't connect to my FTP (on space). I noticed that the powweb site and forum was down but now back up. Is everybody still having problems, or just me?
You have to now ftp to your servername not your domain name. So for instance I am on lunar, so I ftp lunar.powweb.com. I hope that helps.
It wasn't just you. I couldn't FTP for about half an hour. (Yes, I was using the server name. It worked one minute and then next, it didn't.) The forums and OPS were down too--multiple database errors.

jamesI have always done space.powweb.com...Does your server in OPS>FTP still show ... space.powweb.com?
It should show something else ... Not sure but I think space was consolidated with io.powweb.com
I can't find the posting about which legacy servers combined, but this one (http://forum.powweb.com/showthread.php?t=45831) suggests that, yes, space no longer exists.
Space is now terra. i.e., if you were connecting to space.powweb.com you now should connect to terra.powweb.com
Good luck,
Kevin
I am having the same problem... cant ftp using WS_FTP... had mysite.com and get connection failed... Tried the one in OPS (Status active Server Hostname jupiter.powweb.com)
and the one listed on another topic and get "Cant Get "server.powweb.com' host entry Connection failed server.powweb.com"... Is this something I am doing wrong etc or is it due to all the craziness goign on with owweb itslef and jsut need to sit back to wait? Thanks.... do i need to do ftp.jupitor.powweb.com instead of just jupitor.powweb.com etc? I am really new to all this stuff so i would really appreciate the help....

Try reseting your password in OPS (give it 15 min to update) and if it still doesn't work get with support.
Can you login with this http://webftp.powweb.com/ ?
Cant use that either.. I'll try the password reset...
password reset worked.... thanks for the help, much appreciated
I'm confused - now if I want clients to FTP into my FTP space I need to tell them to use magnatar.mydomain.tld? That's a crock.
I just tried ftp.mydomain, which resolves to an IP, but there is no FTP server there.
What do we do to get ftp.mydomain.tld back?
Thanks.
(Edited) BTW, I can't FTP to magnatar.mydomain.tld either. I get "connection closed by remote host" no matter what I do.

If you are on magnatar then the ftp will be to magnatar.powweb.com - your domain doesn't figure in the naming structure.
You need to alter DNS to be able to use ftp.yourdomain.tld - Powweb don't do it for you.

magnatar.powweb.com would be correct for you.

I've heard you can set up a cname in ops for ftp.mydomain.tld. I haven't tried it but others indicate it works.
Good luck,
Kevin
I've seen that too. I presume it's as easy as going to the DNS page for my domain, going down to the "CNAME" row, entering "ftp" for "Alias" and "asteroid.powweb.com" for the "Hostname" then pressing the "add cname" button?
If it doesn't work, how does one delete a CNAME record? Do I enter the "Alias" and nothing for the "Hostname"?
ETA: Oh wait, isn't there a final period on "asteroid.powweb.com."?
ETA: Delete: I see now. After you add a custom one, there's a little [Delete] link next to it.
Good suggestions. I did create a cname for the FTP subdomain. For any other noobs like myself, the other live cnames in there are good examples, "webmail" is the best, which points to "webmail.powweb.com." - and yes, there is a period at the end of the hostname.
OPS says "Zone modified... Awaiting Update (modified zones are updated every 5 minutes". Give it about 10 minutes though. Now my question is: how long does it take for that cname to propagate so that we can use it. Right now that ftp. subdomain is unrecognized so it resolves to my default PW IP (66.152.98.205), but magnatar is .126 so I know I'm not resolving to the right host. Is that standard propagation time of a couple days? I would think if the domain resolves immediately, then the cname would be available immediately as well. ??
Regarding the "Powweb don't do it for you" note from Ian - well, yes, Powweb did it for us and that's the way it was until a few days ago when they un-did it for us. I just wish I had received an e-mail that said something like "Dear domain administrator, we've changed our network and if you want ftp.yourdomain.tld to continue to function you will need to go to OPS and create your own CNAME." Or perhaps rather than un-doing it, when they backed away from load balancing, they should have programmatically reset the CNAME for all accounts that don't have one for "ftp" already created.
That's all hind-sight and I really don't care, I just want my FTP back the way it was ... functional.

See this. (http://forum.powweb.com/showthread.php?p=272681#post272681)
I'm not disagreeing with your point, though. Communications was not at its best during all the recent FTP changes.

I added it about 45 minutes ago and it still doesn't work (assuming I did it correctly, which I'm reasonably sure I did).
OPS:Alias: webmail Hostname: webmail.powweb.com.
Alias: ftp Hostname: asteroid.powweb.com.
Kevin - I have a link on my desktop to these forums but I don't click it every day. A change that breaks all of our FTP links is not something that should just appear in the announcement forum without prior notice. I agree with that other thread that e-mails on all updates from PW just aren't practical. So I just subscribed to the announcement forum, I think it's fair for me to do that, but unfortunately PW never mentioned anything about moving/removing the FTP cname for us anyway, so even if I had updated myself daily with the announcements, we still would have been in the same boat. I know the answers are coming in the various forum threads (like this one), but I have work to do, I can't spend my day scanning forums - contrary to what some of my colleagues may believe.
PW has to meet us half way on this. OK, don't send mass e-mails, but at least post all of the relevant facts somewhere so that we know what's going on. If a web forum isn't the best medium for it then create a read-only blog or diary or something so that at least we can see what changes have been (or are Going to be!) made that we need to act on.
Stefan: Unless someone says otherwise I think we may have to wait a few days for this to take effect.
If that's true, PW might want to consider removing the "Updates take effect in 5 minutes" notice.
I thought it would happen sooner because the DNS records have already propagated (which is what takes 24-72 hours). Oh well.
My experience is that it takes at least an hour before PowWeb's own DNS servers get updated, often more. Then there's propagation.

I had a big diatribe on this subject half written in my previous post, but in the end just decided to leave it be with my understatement of the month. :D
You and I agree on this subject. I just provided the link as extra information on why Powweb doesn't send e-mails.

Huh.. Well how about that. I know it wasn't working for a while, but now it does. Made a liar out of me. :D
EDIT: But also see this:

They didn't do it via CNAME. However, I agree, notice would have been nice and doing it for us would have been nice as well. That way they could have just changed the CNAME, waited for propagation and then deleted the old way.
.... Wait a moment, many people don't rely on DNS via Powweb so Powweb didn't do it for them at all and couldn't change things for them either!
As an FYI for anyone watching this thread or the recent announcement on the topic : I've been waiting over 22 hours for ftp.mydomain.tld to propagate via DNS and it hasn't happened yet. I understand these things take time, and as I said before I expect it could take a couple days, but as I watch the clock I'm starting to wonder if it will ever happen. I need to give one of my clients info to upload data and on the fence about telling them to go to magnatar.powweb.com...
Anyone have any experience to report on the propagation time of a new CNAME entry?
Thanks.
There's something to that "watched kettle never boils" saying...
EDIT:
>>> CNAME propagated after about 30 hours. We can now use ftp.mydomain.tld <<<
Sorry, I meant to post this earlier. It propagated to my home, but not yet to work. So I can confirm that a CNAME for FTP does work--but it can take, apparently, 1-3 days to propagate.
I can't connect to my FTP (on space). I noticed that the powweb site and forum was down but now back up. Is everybody still having problems, or just me?
Try using the FTP server terra.powweb.com and hope this works for you.

I'm still confused after reading all these threads for a couple of days now.
I've always used my internet explorer to access:
ftp://username:password@ftp.jeepjeep.com
so how do I access it now with "Server Hostname: asteroid.powweb.com "

JeepJeep
Try this with your username and password ... it works for me with IE6.
Edited ...
ftp://username:password@asteroid.powweb.com
Thanks!!
I was trying to type it every way possible.... except for that one. LOL
BTW: I did the same thing above, but I checked "Disable smilies in text" so it wouldn't do :p.
