After messing around with my Cute FTP I have found out the reason it won't connect.
Go to the Cute FTP settings if you are using a (ZoneAlarm or other) firewall to protect your computer, and deselect using Cute FTP firewall protection.
It seems that with it checked it is doubling up on the protection and won't allow any comuncation !
