*I'm typing from a relatives house so I don't know specs until later on*

I have a emachine computer, 80 gigs,windows xpetc.

Tuesday, I was on the net. Then it suddenly got slow.. SUPER SLOW! Then, when I went to sites. It'll come up as "page cannot be found and the site cannot be found on this server". I called up Comcast (my internet provider) to troubleshoot. We established that I was connected to the comp and he even assisted me in trying to find the problem. We did pings, restarts, reboots, disables/enables, this, that, EVERYTHING!. No matter what we did, my comp still isn't displaying webpages. When I restart my comp, it'll display pages VERY SLOWLY for a mere 5 minutes then go back to not displaying them at all. And whats more ironic is that it stays plugged to Yahoo Messenger where I can IM friends. I don't think the problem is the connection. Its something dealing with my comp (I think). I've ran spywares, norton antivirus and I still can't surf the net.

Could it be I downloaded something (a program) and its causing this unpleasant intteruption? I'm at a total lost. I'm in dire need of some assistance Powweb'ers. What do I do?

:(

I'd probably look at a possible spyware removal session. Ad-aware or Spybot good suggestions.

Have you tried reinstalling your NIC? Do you have another you could swap out to test?

Well, if you can IM your friends...it would seem that you are connected to the internet.

I would get one of my friends dialup info to eliminate its the cable connection. Then I would get a new browser (if you're using IE, get firefox)...and see if it could be browser related.

Did you install any new programs...or mess with your firewall??

Nice to see you around again Terrell ;)

Thnx for the greeting Berks :)

@Tbone, I don't know how to re-install NIC?

Berks, I use IE & Firefox to browse. So its not browser related...

BUT,

On the day it went out, I did install this DVD Ripper program called "IMToo". When I installed it, my comp started going out like a hour or so after that. I deleted that program but I don't know if it cunningly sneaked something into my system to make it act like this.

I'm thinking of taking it to a computer technician to have him take a look at it...

If it's just web sites it might be a dns problem...check with your ISP to see if they've made any changes to the dns servers you're supposed to use. Worth a shot.

might wanna use your five minutes of connectivity per reboot to download a different browser and try that...it would help eliminate whether it's IE that's causing the problem or something with the O/S

Just another thought. Seems I had something similar when a system I was working on couldn't find anything. Applied the TCP/IP StackFix and that cleared up the networking on that system. Should be able to find it if you can get on line. If not, advise and I'll try to send it to you.

And to add on to it. Take this web site to a discussion similar, with the link to get the fix.

Now this is just to weird. Well, 1st off my comp is working fine now...

After pulling my hair our and catching a few headaches. I exhausted everything that I knew and was told to me. I called a computer technician and he quoted he can fix the problem for $55.

Well, 15 minutes ago... Off impulse, a popped-in one of those AOL CDs to see if I should try to run my comp on dial-up... I fully installed AOL on my system. BUT, I NEVER tested it cuz I came to a comclusion that I don't want to have nothing to do with AOL. So I completed removed two versions of the AOL program off my comp. I restarted the comp and VOILA, everythings working! I know this problem and solution sounds SUPER WEIRD but thats exactly what happened. I'm just hoping the problem stays fixed...

it was your winsocks or tcp/ip stack or whatever. Depending on your version of windows. When you installed AOL, it installed its own little 'customized' version of the winsocks/tcp-ip stack, but, as AOL always does, failed to remove them and replace them with the originals when you uninstalled them. I'm about 95% certain that's what it was. Go AOL.
