I just recently decided to wipe my desktop computer clean and do a fresh install of XP Pro. I put the disc in and it gets through about 20% of the formatting and then the entire system shuts down. What's the problem?

Also, when I tried putting 98SE on the system, it fdisk's OK but then when I try to format the drive it says "Cannot format a network drive". This is the ONLY hard drive on the system. Why is that happening and how can I solve that problem?

is ur computer connected to a network?

if yes, was the hard drive shared with the rest of the network?

Did you originally have XP Pro on there?

Check your connections to your computer, you power connector might be loose and causing this problem.

If not, open up your case, and check that the 3 pin power connector to your hard disk is securely in and not loose. Also check that your IDE cable is securely in.

Also check that the connectors to your CD/DVD-ROM drive that you use to read the XP disk are connected securely.

Try reinstalling again.

Does your computer still have a warranty on it?
If it does, try to get it fixed.

Faulty PSU?
Hard DIsk going bad?
CD/DVD-ROM reading error/skips?

I'm not too sure how to fix this since I'm not there in front of your system...

Anyone else have suggestions or know how to fix this?
