View Full Version : XP question that has been bugging me
I need to get into the MS-DOS prompt. Not the start menu>programs>accessories>ms-dos. I mean to restart in MS-DOS. I can't find it anywhere and on the net also. I need this to install a couple of drivers. If anyone knows that would be great.
when you reboot your computer, keep pressing one of the F's buttons, i think maybe F10, till it shows you if you wanna enter SAFE mode or so. You will find a command prompt section
Boot or reboot your computer and start pressing the F8 key. You see a boot menu that will allow you to start WinXP in various ways. Select Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
IMPORTANT NOTE: There is no more "MS-DOS" in XP (supposedly).
Unless the driver is specifically for WinXP, you will likely cause O/S problems by installing a DOS mode driver in Safe Mode w/CP.
If I may ask, what requires DOS Mode installation?
Robert
RSaucier, very old games may require dos installation
True -- but chances are that very old games won't run under XP.
Many DOS games tend to want to access hardware resources directly -- a BIG no-no under Windows XP. Apps that attempt direct hardware access will either crash the system (rare under XP and that makes me happy!) or just not work.

Just to confirm, there is no dos reboot option under XP. I am running XP Home, the best you could do is get a Win 98 boot disk and boot up with that, then exit the install wizard, if your hard disk is NTFS that won`t work either.
There is no actually dos mode in XP. There is a DOS command prompt emmulator that can be used like DOS but DOS is actually not part of the XP operating system. At least that is what I have been told by our team here.
Would not recommend trying to load DOS drivers. This may and can cause the operating system to not function.
It is a driver to my old mitsumi 2x burner. It was working great and I'm to bent over it taking too long to burn. Thanks for the replies. Much appreciated.
Go to Start then Run & type in CMD Don't know if this is what you need but it opens a window & I've run several dos programs from there on XP home.
