Desktop searching

I've been using Google Desktop to index my hard drive, but I've found that it doesn't update the index when I change the names of, delete, or move files. I can't find a way to force it to re-index, and the only way I've found to get rid of the extraneous files is to explicitly specify which file and folder paths should not be included in the search results.

I'm going to uninstall Google Desktop and try some other desktop search programs. Does anyone know of one that will be able to do what I want? Thanks in advance if you can help!
