View Full Version : Internet explore 6 causing issues
Hi, i was wondering if someone can help me with this issues that i am having on my computer. About 1 week ago i upgraded my ie 5.5 to ie 6.0. But i decided to revert back to 5.5 instead. I did use the add/remove utility tool to accomplish this task, but once i did this my ie went nuts. For example, i open my ie and i go to google.com but the field where you enter your key words does not respond; i try to go to my ie and certain sites that i visit give me runtime scripts errors, or when i open up outlook express, or try to view my control panel and click on any of the icon it also produce the run time script error.
I was doing some research and i found out that ie 6.0 is tightly intergrated with the windows os. It seems like when i try to remove 6.0 it some how damage or caused some problems with windows its self . Now my question to the forum folks is can you tell me how i can run the ie 6.0 repair tool because i do not have access to the control panel i am unable to do via the ie repair tool within add/ remove program. Can someone please help me reslove this issue..

Have you tried booting into safe mode to try accessing your control panel?
Hitting the F8 key during boot up or holding down the left CTRL key during boot up should bring up the boot menu. If all else fails, you can edit the MSDOS.SYS file with Note Pad (not Word Pad) and change the Menu value under [Options]
[Options]
BootMenu=1
This will bring up a boot menu each time you boot the system and allow you to get into Safe Mode.
You might also try going to the Windows Update site and seeing if it will re-install your IE6. There's also a good chance (unless you deleted them) that the original IE6 install files are still on your hard drive, in the Temp directory.
the sad part is that i did try going into safe mode but i was still unable to view the control panel. It gave me the same error as when tried it in normal mode so to speak. Ive also try to reinstall the ie 6.0 again but it gave me an error message that the last installation has failed therefore it was prompting me try the installion again or do the repair but when i tried this the script error occured. And everytime i reset the computer the same dialoge box poped up prompting me to do the reinstalltion of ie 6.0 , so i had to go into the msconfig utility in order to remove it from start up. I am not sure what to do becasue even when i try to use the restoration utility of Windows Me it give me the same error that i get when i try to use the control panel. I am doing my own research on the net in addition to asking on the forums in order to solve this annonying issue that i am getting. But thanks for your responce JJ

Alternatively, use FireFox :D
Hi IanS Windows Me does have a restore point utitliy in order to roll back to a previous state but when i try it, it gives me that infamous error i was talking about and when i press ok to close the dialog box the utility become useless becasue it does not allow me to select a date that i can roll it back to. Boy i really would hate to format my harddisk in order to solve this issue but i will not give up hope yet. But when all eles fails you gotto whip the horses eyes. Right now the horse's eyes are safe becasue i have not thrown in the towel yet. Thanks for the suggestion IanS

Again, I don't know if it'll help.
I did a little research myself and came upon the IEradicator - http://www.voodoofiles.com/3909 I've not used it and can't vooch for it, but looks like what you need to remove the registry entries that were left over from the install/uninstall process.
In a similar circumstance (but with XP-Pro or W2k) I'd re-install the OS without re-formatting the HD. That way files will remain intact (but you have a full back-up of them anyway don't you :D). I can't remember whether it would mean the re-installation of application software - so beware.

I concur. Normally I'd leave that for last but afgter everything you've tried it's looking dismal. :(
Personally, I'd ditch WinME. It's rife with bugs. I know, it came with my ThinkPad (Wwhich now runs W2K but only because I can't get Linux to run on it! )
In business there's the golden rule: location, location, location
In computers it's: backup, backup, backup :D
Hold on, back up a second...
Windows MeThere, I've identified your problem. ;)
You can run win2k on that system...time to drag yourself into the late 90's and upgrade. ME is just going to kill you every time you turn around.

there's no need for debate, win ME is bad. i've already had to repair and fix several comps running ME, and all it has given me are huge headaches and error upon error (coupled with hardware going bad). Follow the others suggestions by upgrading to win2k or winXP, they are your safest bet right now. You can just get a OEM version of XP at www.newegg.com for less than $100.
Are we going to get into this debate again mjp? :DDon't tell me you're going to defend ME as a viable OS? Or is your evil plan to get him to spend his life savings on a Mac? I don't trust you...

Like I'd argue that ME is a practical OS, and OF COURSE I'd argue that he spend money on a Mac. I thought you knew me?
Windows ME = Windows Masochistic Experience
Reformat and install DOS or better yet Linux :D
I thing rolling back the installation will do the job by bringing up the internet repair tool. I do have nortons system works and i used threre registry clean up tool and it did do some cleaning up but that did nt solve the issue.
Boy how i regret mentioning that i stil use Me but i thought microsoft built this os just for ME now i fell like a total Microsoft mark. By the way the last comment was my feeble attempt at a joke

ehh..hahahehe :D
i suggest you do a complete backup of any data/files you might need. After you backup, reformat your hard drive and reinstall WinME. My suggestion is to do a fresh install of WinXP (preferably PRO edition) instead of reinstalling ME since support for that OS fell off the charts so long ago.
i am happy to say that i found a solution for my problem. I was looking at the ms kb and this is what i was looking for:
How to Repair or Return to Previous Internet Explorer Installation
If the Internet Explorer Repair Tool Verification does not work, or if Internet Explorer 5
is not listed in the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel, you may be able to start
the Internet Explorer Repair tool from a command prompt. To do so, click Start, click
Run, and then in the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK:
rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"
I want to thank everyone who looked at my post and provided suggestion. Thank you and have a good day.

Oh yes . . . I forgot your sig:
It will be mine soon. Oh yes, it will be mine.

But I can promise you this - give me four months - and it's in my hands. :)
