This is a question based on the user agreement concerning bandwidth/excessive usage.

I'm planning to use the ftp on my site to share work related zipped psd files with colleagues in our UK offices. My worry is the "Excessive Resource User Policy". Everything should be well within my bandwidth limits, but if my colleagues went and downloaded new file uploads all at once, then I'm not in a position to say whether or not it would violate the "Excessive Resource User Policy".

The real question is this: If I do accidentally violate the "Excessive Resource User Policy", do I get a warning that I can heed, or do I get in big account terminating trouble styraight away....

Client agrees that webpages and files uploaded to our servers will not violate any state, federal or foreign laws or regulations; infringe on any intellectual property rights of PowWeb or any third party; be defamatory, slanderous or trade libelous; be threatening or harassing; be discriminatory based on gender, race, age; promote hate; or contain viruses or other computer programming defects which result in damage to PowWeb or any third party. Customers may not run IRC, bots or clients. Unacceptable uses also include: Bulk emailing, unsolicited emailings, newsgroup spamming, pornographic content or links to adult websites, MP3, illegal content, copyright infringement, trademark infringement, warez, cracks, software serial numbers.

b. Bandwidth Usage: PowWeb offers a generous 16 gigs of data transfer per month. An account that uses over 16 gigs per month will be charged $8 USD per gig each month. PowWeb reserves the right to impose the Excessive Resource User Policy for the consideration of all customers.

Excessive Resource User Policy: Resources are defined as bandwidth and/or processor utilization. A website is considered using "Excessive amounts of resources" when it monopolies the resources available using 10% or more of system resources for longer than 60 seconds. There are numerous problems that could cause such problems, this includes: cgi scripts, FTP, HTTP, etc. A site that consumes over 1GB/day or 25GB/month of bandwidth is also considered "excessive resources". This policy is only implemented in extreme circumstances and is intended to prevent the misuse of our servers. We reserve the rights to suspend or terminate any hosting account that we feel is jeopardizing our network. PowWeb will be the sole and final arbiter as to what constitutes a violation of this policy.

If you are reaching your bandwith limit you will be advised before hand. If you excced your limit you will be charged extra.

But I would suggest that you look out into your webstats to know your bandwith levels!!

It doesn't matter if 20 people are using your site and FTP at the same time...as long as you don't go over your limit. When you are getting close, Powweb will email you about it. You can also check your webstats to see how much you are using.

And remember it's "your account" no matter who's uploading or downloading, so you will need to keep a close eye on your usage.

Just a thought,
You might give each individual a certain time frame in which to upload or download something so there not all at once.

Just a silly question but do the access_logs actually show FTP usage?

Where can we find how much we have transfered?

The access log doesn't show FTP transfers, only HTTP information. There's no way to see the FTP data yet.

Remember, you only use FTP to upload your files and then to maintain/update your pages afterwards.

W/ only 200 MB of disk space, you would be hard pressed to use over 200 MB of data transfer on a monthly basis (let alone yearly ;)

Just for my information is the 16G limit the sum of http requests, ftp in/out and email in/out?

Right now, only http is counted towards your "transfer".

We will not include mail or FTP until we can provide reports for our customers.

Starr,
Does this include all FTP accounts, or only the main account?

frequencypro,

I assuming that would include all FTP accounts on the same package. If not Starr will clarify.

Yeh...I remember on a previous post that it was included on your bandwidth ( I can't find it since you can't search for FTP...not 4 letters...but anyway), now its not included?? Let me know since I'm always worried about FTP'ing large files since it counts against my bandwidth.
