Howdy, all!

I was wanting to set up a forum/messasge board. I know about Bravenet and a few others that will host your board (witht he addition of their own ads), but I was really hoping I could host it myself with a script or program available somewhere.

Does anyone know how to go about this? (Talk as unto a babe when you reply- I know HTML, but am programming illiterate, so far) If it is going to be something that will turn out to be exceedingly complicated, does anyone know of a forum host they recommend? (NOT everyone.net- they are lame) I would really like to be able to brand the forum to match my site, and as few glaring ads as possible (I REALLY want to avoid casino ads and the like- I have a family oriented site)

Free Forum w/ a lot of tweaks. Easy to install if you follow the directions. Very easy to configure and use.

Ok- I have run into what seems to be a problem. IkonBoard's installation guide states that my directories need to be changed to CHMOD 0777. Powweb's Faqs state:
What permissions should I use? (category:CGI, SSI, and PHP)
All scripts, as well as the directories that contain them, must be set CHMOD 755.

Smart_FTP seems to agree, because it will not let me change the CHMOD properties of the directories I have created.

People seem to have installed IkonBoard on PowWeb- How did you all circumvent this issue?

Uploading

Step
5.Go back to your cgi-bin/ikonboard/directory. Upload in binary the .tar files. Chmod them to 777.

This is the only place in the tut thats states to chmod 777. Not the directories themselves just the .tar files.

maybe we are using a differnt build of IkonBoard, but my tut instructs all dirs to be 755.

I am making a copy of the tut that came with my build available for discussion (minus the images, for my convenience:) ) on my site @ http://www.jesusisonthe.net/install.html

I successfully chmoded my binary tar files, at least.

Thanks for helping! :)

Here's the problem. This tut is specific for Powweb install.

one more thing... is "/usr/sbin/sendmail" the right setting for Path to Sendmail?

Here's all the paths you will probably ever need

/usr/bin/perl
/usr/local/bin/php
/usr/sbin/sendmail
/bin/date
