View Full Version : MSN Messenger Not Connecting, Blames "Domain Authority Configuration Version"

I am running Windows XP (SP2 with all available updates) and MSN Messenger 7.0.0777.
For the last month, when trying to connect, the "Signing In..." window sits there for about 30 seconds, then just returns to the "click below to sign in" without giving an error message.

When I try to troubleshoot the connection (Tools -> Options -> Connection -> Connection Settings -> Test Connection), it brings up the following information:
We found some system settings that might be preventing a connection to Messenger.

Setting Proposed Change
Domain Authority Clear
Domain Authority Configuration Version Clear

I then click "Repair", and it says "Success. Messenger has changed the system settings. Please click "Next" and login to MSN Messenger."
I follow those instructions and the exact same thing occurs. This occurs even if I reboot after the change.

MSN's troubleshooting pages don't mention anything about this error.

How can I fix it?

FYI: I use Zone Alarm Security Suite 5.5.094.000, but even tried turning it off and still had exactly the same problem.

I even totally uninstalled MSN Messenger and re-downloaded it, same problem.

In Tools -> Options -> Connection under "Connection Status", during the attempted sign-in, I get the message:
You are directly connected to .NET Messenger Service

All other times, it says:
You are currently NOT connected to .NET Messenger Service

Apparently the program thinks it is successfully connecting ?!?

HI,

Sorry, I'm not able to help you... Since "misery needs company", it's just to tell you I have the exact same problem, with almost identical config. (I've just downgraded from XP to win2K to see if it had anything to do with it, but no...). BTW, did you manage to solve the problem? I sometimes even get disconnected for no apparent reason. :(

I haven't yet resolved it. On some days I can connect fine; at other times, I still get the same message.

I don't think this is the problem but I will throw it out there. Did you check the windows firewall? It's probably not the problem since your problem is not persistent. I use MSN/Microsoft Messenger at work and sometimes have this problem although I am not sure of the exact error, it just sits there and the 2 little figures just spin around and around as if to spite you, and it never connects.

Another thought, based on another discussion on this board about how over overworked the hotmail servers are, maybe this is a similar problem. Maybe their IM server are just getting overrun with loggins at certain times and some just get ignored. Something on their end is probably the most likely culprit since the problem comes and goes with no apparent relation to what's happening on your end.

I had this problem just found out how to fix it, bascially go options then connections in msn 7 then go to advanced settings and uncheck all and press okay

Simple but effective and it wasn't even on the msn help site !!!!!

I have been struggling for days to fix this blasted problem. I didn't think to change the settings because other messenger accounts were able to log on from my PC. Wierd

Thanx a million!!!

I've been having the same problem as other posters with MSN. I followed this advice and unchecked all the boxes and problem was fixed. No clue why that would be the problem, but it fixed it and made my life easier. Thanks man.

Procedures to Fix:

Open MSN Messanger
Go to "Tools"
Go to "Options"
Click on "Connection"
Click on "Advanced Settings"
Uncheck All Boxes
Click "OK"

Easy Fix to a pain in the butt problem.

Thanks,

Are you running McAfee Firewall, or just the anti-virus?
It may not be related to your current problem, but it is not a good idea to be running two firewalls at the same time. If you are running McAfee Firewall, disable Windows Firewall.

I have a similar problem and none of the solutions posted above work. I am unable to access Msn Mssngr since I installed norton yesterday. I've been tinkering with the settings since a couple of hrs now. Unlike Windows Firewall, which is extremely user friendly, Norton blocks everything and does not even ask :(

Msn wants me to unblock these 2 things but I don't know whr they are:

Setting Proposed Change

-Domain Authority Clear
-Domain Authority Configuration Version Clear

Also frm Options, Internet Worm Protection, Program Control, I've already granted access to msn. So then, whr is the problem now?

Besidez all this I finally Uninstalled Norton and then tried accesing but to no avail. Now I get 'no error' and it directs me to fill the problem form which I'm unable to send.

In conclusion, uninstall Norton ;)

I already did that, read my post. Norton is a friggin headache if you're using it for the first time.

Norton completely uninstalled~
Msn mssng 7.0 reinstalled 3 times already.~

It was Norton that was blocking thses processes or whtever they are:

-Domain Authority Clear
-Domain Authority Configuration Version Clear

I looked in CP, administrative tools, services but these are not there. I think even after uninstalling Norton, these services are being blocked or rather have been 'left' blocked.I need to figure out wht and whr they are I guess.

EDIT: Also the error I'm getting is : 800701f9 and the solution at the msn web page does'nt work :(

Sorry I answered your post too fast.

Do a system restore for 2-3 days ago.

That all right NMS. I did'nt think that System Restore would actually work. thnx so much! Hopefully I won't have any problems? Boz this is the first time system restore is working and I'm keeping the settings intact. Also do you think I should still run Norton? :)

As soon as I ran System Restore, msn mssngr worked. Now that I shut down and restarted my comp (after an hr or so), I'm getting the same error mssg again :(

Signing in msn mssngr failed becoz the service is temporarily unavailable. Plz try again later. 800701f9.

Guyz, I'm sure there has to be someone else who had the same problem and fixed it. Plz help! :(

No it does'nt. I click on "Start MSN Web Mssngr", but nothing happnes! In fact after System Restore, I have been unable to open anything. My msn messenger works with less error mssgs but the e-mails won't open. I can't check e-mails frm any id, be it an id of hotmail. yahoo or rediff. I can't sign in yahoo either. This is so frustrating. I have tried various Anti-Viruses to check if it is a virus problem, Antivir, Panda (amazing resource hoggr) and even pc-cillin besides checking with MS Antispyware but to no avail. There are occasional adware problems but I get rid of them with adware personal. Any idea why my e-mails won't open? :(

try using system restore again and go further away from the problem .. if that does not fix then undo the previous restore
