View Full Version : CHMOD - File permissions

I have tried, six times, to get ikonboard uploaded and installed. I've gone by the precise instructions. But I am having a problem setting the permissions.
I use WSFTP to upload files to my site.
questions:
1. Can I use telent to make CHMOD changes? If so, how is it done?
2. Using FTP, how is it done? (I've gone into dirInfo (which opens up all those dxrxrwdxrwxdrxrwdxwdr's in notepad. I've made the changes stated in the instructions and "saved" them. Then, when I check by using dirInfo again, they are back to their original default settings. I believe that is why I can't install ikonboard.
Any suggestions? Anyone?
Depending on which WS_FTP you're using, you should just be able to right click on whatever file needs it's permissions set and go to town. First, highlight the file that needs to be set, then right click. You should see 'chmod (UNIX)' towards the bottom of the menu. If not, upgrade to WS_FTP LE from www.download.com

I was tearing my hair out when I installed my first BBS!
Good Luck!
By the way, are you sure you're uploading in ASCII mode?

When you set the CHMOD settings in FTP, I assume you are doing it by simply right-clicking on a file and then selecting CHMOD from the pop-up menu. (WS FTP Pro)
The problem is that the box that pops up with the nine toggle switches is always going to be set on the last settings that you set. In other words, when you set the permissions for one file, and then go to set them for another, you are looking at the CHMOD settings you last entered, whatever the file may be, NOT an updated depiction of the CHMOD settings for the next file.
The only way to get a proper reading of your directory's CHMOD settings is to refresh after CHMOD'ing and use the "Directory Info" function of FTP.
An excellent point about the pop-up box retaining the settings, but it's never proven to be a problem for me when I'm installing or changing.

I have been Fighting a Links script for months.
I finally downloaded FTPWORKS
http://www.corbanware.com/ftpworks.html
It is able to set the CHMOD correctly.
All Is well now
(WHY would one of the largest FTP progams have such a BUG)

Junglerat, if you need help with ikonboard let me know. I've set it up a few dozen times. What version do you have?

I can't get icons to display. I'm using version iB3.

This thing is more troublesome than useful. I think.

That's a neat trick with WS_FTP LE and right clicking. I never knew that! But nothing labled CHMOD appears. Any guess why?
I've got Cute Cast (a message board) installed, but am stumped by the perl path and chmod -- never done this before! I know WHAT to do, just not where and how.
Thanks!

If anyone is using WS_FTP and is having trouble with a cgi I would suggest you change ftp programs. There is a glitch with the program. When I first started using the program everything worked fine. This gave me a false sense of security about its dependability. I then changed to powweb server. Lots of hair pulling later I discovered that ws_ftp wasn't changing the permissions even though it showed that they had been changed to whatever I told it to change too.
I even contacted powweb support and asked them why the chmod kept changing back to no execute after I tried to run the cgi script!!! It was the stupid ftp program all along.

Junglerat, if your icons aren't showing up then the path to your images directory is wrong. Check the path statements in the config file to be sure they are pointing to the FULL path:
/www/w/yoursite/htdocs/ikonboard/images (example)
During the install it should have notified you if there was a problem finding the images including the avatars. Are the avatars working??

Thanks SimCo....
I still have several issues unresolved and I hope (G) that once the "Gold" issue hits the street, they will be addressed.
I've learned how to deal with the avatars and emoticons. Thus far, I am still on a learning curve. Ikonboard has a lot to it...
Thanks for your consideration,

Hey Omegaman,
You are absolutely right!
I already posted this elsewhere, but that program (WS-FTP) turned out to be the cause of ALL my script problems. I switched to CuteFTP, set the chmods, and everything worked perfectly -- instantly.

CuteFTP rocks - well worth the money. The scheduling agent is extremely versatile and can even be used for redundant uploads for webcams and other real time events.
