I've been taking courses on Web design and graphics at the local community college. My site, www.gwissen.com, takes the paradigm of an Internet Journey. Please look at this site and let me know what you think.

Eventually, I will expand the site to become a marketing tool. I will add my resume and include a complete portfolio.

Hmmmm, where to start ;)

You have done a really good job, and your web design classes have paid off with interest.

You pages load nicely even with a slow modem dial-up connection as what I have, and I like your ideas for colors and graphics.

There is a wee bit of horizontal scroll at 800x600 resolution, but nothing that distracts from the content.

I saw only a very few minor glitches while browsing through your site, and some of those could have easily have been my connection speed at the time.

Overall, I hope that you received an A for your work as I think you deserve one. :) I am sure that over time you will add to and update your site many times and with each update it will only get better.

Thank you so much for the kind words. Could you please tell me a little more about the glitches so that I can correct them.

The "minor" horizontal scrolling -- was it in the main Journey site, or was it in one of the links from Web Design One or Web Design Two? The reason I am asking is that my more recent efforts have been designed for 760 x 420. If they are not displaying properly, I want to correct that.

Again, thanks for the evaluation.

Hi Gail,

The main intro page has a bit of horizontal scroll, and the "My Journey" pages have only enough to cause the horizontal bar to appear, but no actual scrolling.

Most of the minor glitches I spoke of, were as I had thought most due to my ISP at the time, causing things to load slow and jerky.

The only "glitch" that I'm seeing now that I noticed last night, is that the mouse overs on your "My Internet Journey" pages are not loading until the mouse is left over them for some time. This of course causes the text not to appear.

You may want to consider using %'s instead of a static size for your tables... when you set your table for 779 pixels then take into account the margins for a browser, spacing, and different settings your visitors may have on their systems... at 779 it doesn't leave much room for those things.

But as I said before, only very very minor things... overall you have a great site and well done.

Thanks, Jack.

I'll look at the code for my pages and see what I can figure out. I created the Journey jpages in Fireworks and then exported to Dreamweaver. The only thing I did to the tables in DW was to center them. But, I'll play with the code and see what I can come up with.

I think that the slow loading of the Journey rollovers has something to do with Internet speed. Again, I created these rollovers in Fireworks, and I don't know what I can do to make them load faster.

I was browsing through your site. I love it! Please, do you mind sharing your secret? How do you make the navigation bar move vertically with the page? It's very effective.

Gail,

Thanks for the comment on my site, it's one of those "Forever a Work in Progress" things which started out as just a way to have my bookmarks available when I was out on a service call.

That menu script is one I picked up from Dynamic Drive, you should check out the site http://www.dynamicdrive.com/ there are a lot of fun and useful scripts there that are fairly easy to setup and modify.

Keep up the good work, and always continue to strive to learn more each day... that is the secret to staying young (at heart anyway)

Jack,

I didn't want you to think that I was ignoring your suggestion. I can't change my table width from 760 px to 100%. I tried it, and you wouldn't believe the disaster! These pages were created in Fireworks and then exported to Dreamweaver. In the export process, the Fireworks png file is converted to a table. Changing any of the table settings -- except changing the align setting from Default to Center -- completely breaks up the table. This is more than a little ugly ... it looks almost like broken ice ... impossible to figure out what it's supposed to look like.

I liked your suggestion; but, I'll have to implement it elsewhere.

Well Gail, as you stated it was only a "suggestion" nothing more. As I'd said, the horizontal scroll that is there is not a problem and does not take away from your site at all.

Most pages are only just wide enough to make the horizontal scroll bar appear with no actual scroll there. What few pages have a bit of a horiz scroll are just minimal and not needed to be able to read everything on your pages.

I'm not sure why your pages do that, because with your table set for 760 they should have no horizontal scroll. The typical browser window for an 800x600 resolution is around 782x447 not counting the space for the vertical scroll bar (just viewing area).

Your projects are awesome. Just didn't like the intro page.

Thanks for your input. The intro definetely needs some rework as it does not fit with the rest of the site. This happened because the intro page was created before anything else and was meant to act like a table of contents.

My husband (and sometimes severest critic) prefers the sharply defined colors of the intro page to the muted mauves of the rest of the site. My Fireworks instructor and classmates prefered the mauve color scheme to strong colors.

I expect that I will change my site many times as I continue learning about creating Web pages. What type of color scheme do you think is best -- strong, or muted?

Thank you all so very much for your help.

Hi

What is the code to make my content have a border using the color of my background? The content table is white, and my background color is green. I want the same green to be the border around my content page. About 1 or 2 pixel ( I am not sure of pixel size, but a 1 or 2 in border. As it stands now, the content width is the same width as my background, with exception to the bottom of the background table...its way too long in length.

Thanks! :)

what program are you using or are you writing the code?

You could just adjust the table border to zero.
